Q: Can someone explain the extreme cost of bass recorders? the yamaha over $200, the aulos over $350!! for a mass production piece of plastic?

Anything not as popular--is more expensive. There is less demand for the bass recorder, so, they don't make as many, and therefore, it is more money and resources to produce them--with a bigger risk of losing money for the company/factory. This is why a cheap electric guitar is under 100 dollars--and the normal, school recorder is cheap--mas production. People could not afford cars--until Henry Ford created mass production--and bank loans.

Q: OK for a beginner > 60, or too late?

I'm 52 and didn't have any trouble with it. Just be aware that a bass recorder requires a lot more air than the smaller ones, and it needs to be a steady stream. Making the bass make a good sound improved my breath control and fingering in a way that helped on the other recorders.

Q: What is the difference between this bass recorder made of wood resin compared to other Yamaha bass recorder made of plastic? Both are sold on Amazon

An all wood recorder has a nice warm sound but can be very expensive. On the opposite side of the spectrum a plastic recorder can be harsh and intonation of notes can be off, however it is much less expensive. My understanding of what Yamaha has done is that they have created this wood resin that gives the instrument a warmer sound as if you had a wooden bass. I love the sound of my bass. It is also more durable.
