A push-your-luck race that is colorful and *fun*
I think this is my favorite push-your-luck game. Other games of this genre set your expectations high, and then ruin your day by busting your turn, but Cubitos does the opposite - sets your expectations low, and then gives you these wonderful moments of feeling super lucky. You are guaranteed at least 3 "hits" per round, and if you push farther than that and bust, it's your own fault. Basically, other push-your-luck games have way more feel-bad moments, and Cubitos has way more feel-good moments. The game gets bonus points for allowing players' turns to be simultaneous, and for having built-in catch-up mechanics to keep races close until the home stretch. The "first game" setup is great for learning, and then there are other cards to change up what each dice type does in future games. About half of those alternate abilities are a little "meh" for me, but there's still plenty of great game in here, lots of different strategies to try out, and also plenty of room for expansions to add more variety. You could also very easily make up your own custom cards/abilities, for the creatively inclined. My biggest gripe (and I've seen this echoed in other reviews) is that the little cardboard boxes that store and display the dice look great in pictures, but they're a pain in the butt to deal with, when setting up and breaking down the game. In the future, I'll probably just throw all of the dice into a single bowl for gameplay, and then dump them into a single plastic baggie for storage. In any case, the board and dice and player mats are all bright and colorful, and the game has a great table presence.Cubitos is...- More interesting than lighter push-your-luck games like Can't Stop or Incan Gold.- Easier to set up and teach than any of the Clank! games.- A bit lighter, less frustrating, and more fun than Quacks of Quedlinberg.- Mostly non-interactive/non-confrontational - there's no way to attack other players.- Not as strategically deep as other deck/dice/tableau-builders like Dominion or Roll for the Galaxy- FUN. I can't stress this enough. It's light and fun without feeling too simple or random.

Better than the box cover artwork!!!
My wife and I love this game. If you are familiar with the game Quacks of Quedlinberg, then this is basically a dice version of that game (also somewhat similar to Quarriors or Dice Masters).Anyway, the game is fun and has tons of replayability. Here is a very short rundown. You set up the game board and up to four players race against each other around a track (6 different options). There are a ton of unique dice that you have the option to purchase as the game progresses. These dice have different abilities and these abilities can change game to game based on your choices (lots of replayability). Ultimately each time you roll you can push your luck by rolling a handful of dice until you decide you want to stop, or you BUST and have to wait until next round. If you don't bust, then for the most part you use your dice to move your game piece along the track, or you purchase more dice. Game goes until someone passes the finish line.Summary: I really like the game and will play it many more times. Fairly easy to learn although some of the dice options can be tricky to understand at first. Game takes about an hour to play. It was worth the purchase for sure.

Some push your luck but also a lot of tough decisions
Cubitos has become a top-5 game for us and that in spite of the fact that we play mostly 2-player. Almost all racing game will be more fun with a group but Cubitos is just fine with two. Push your luck is clearly the base but hardly the only component. Dice management is quite important, too, but it's the characters/ cards attached to the dice that are amazing. Different set-ups, sets of characters available in a race, can make the game feel entirely different. So different that experienced gamers like us have to work hard to adjust our strategy and tactics. Yes, there is strategy as well as tactical planning in Cubitos. The cards are fun, the names, the abilities and the interactions.Negatives? Quibbles. With so many different cards/ abilities, there are bound to be edge cases, rules uncertainties. Most can be answered with logic or reference to the rules' basic principles but be prepared to double check or discuss things that aren't immediately clear. The dice themselves are small but seem of good quality, and there are a lot of them! I bought aftermarket packaging to replace the cardboard boxes supplied. They're OK but the dice are the stars of the game.Bottom line: Top 10 in my 300 game collection. You'll need a few plays to get the flow and see the combos but it's a dice-lover's/ thinker's gem.
