Fantastic Voyage

Classic Sci-Fi Movie from the 60's
Amazing Sci-Fi movie that looks at the concept of miniturization of the human body (and a min-sub) to destroy an inoperable blood clot inside a VIP. Awesome story line and outstanding special effects! Plus, the stunning Raquel Welch is in it....what's not to love? LOL!This movie spawned a VERY cool Filmation cartoon of the same name and probably influenced movies like "Innerspace" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids".The DVD itself was great quality and nice sturdy and colorful cover!

Beautiful imagery of this film
This is the best this film has looked since I saw it in the theater all those years ago. Being an early science fiction fan due to shows like The Outer Limits I begged my mom to take us to see it and it was amazing and impressive to see up on the big screen. One of the things that really caught my eye was all those colors amid the incredible story itself. The visuals were really eye catching and watching the accompanying documentary/interviews that came with the disc I learned how difficult it was to make for the time long before CGI came along. Indeed, the film was almost scrapped. Through the years as this film was shown on TV in the pan and scan versions the color was always terrible though I watched it anyway being such a big fan. Now on the blu-ray release the colors are all brought back to their original glory and in wide screen to see it the way the film makers intended it to be seen. Twentieth Century Fox should be proud of their restoration. The Amazon price for this item is a real bargain.

One major flaw remains...
Finally, I received my Blu-ray disc. As I had written before I had hoped this movie had undergone some necessary treatment.Well, good news first: the picture quality is very good to excellent for a 5o-year-old movie with that amount of composite shots. The DeLuxeColor photography looks much better than on any other version I have (FV has been my absolute favourite film for 40 years now I have gathered a good deal of different versions from this movie over the past years: TV recordings, VHS-, LaserDisc- and DVD-copies). And although the original opening title has been reinserted there is still something left to be desired:The print used for the Blu-ray mastering is obviously the same used for the previous DVD versions and it contains the following flaws:1. The passage through the subarachnoid cavatiy (1:25:51-1:26:49) contains the most annoying flaw: wrong tinting. The entire scene is supposed to appear tinted in green color. All of my prints and copies (except DVD) show this tinting during the entire scene and the dramatic effect is gorgeous, making that scene a very dark link between the light inner ear shot before and the sparkling thoughts in the brain after. On DVD this effect is completetely spoiled showing a RED background in the first half of the scene (1:25:51-1:26:27) and changing unintentiously to a GREEN background for the rest (1:26:28-1:26:49). The faces of the actors in the foreground remain somewhat pink instead of reflecting the dark green from the outside as it was present in the prints used for the non-DVD versions.2. There is a jumpcut at 1:37:56. Well, it is not noticeable in the picture but in the soundtrack if one is familiar with the fine timing of Leonard Rosenman's score.

Don't expect 2224 effects. The effects are not bad, being an older film.
An OK film for its day.

Serious Sci-Fi fare.
Tense sci-fi thriller. The cold war has produced a new weapon: miniaturization. The problem is both sides have it and neither side can control it, objects return to normal size after one hour. A scientist working for the other side has discovered a way to keep objects miniaturized until the process is reversed but has defected to our side so we can have it. After getting him safely into the US the car he is in is ambushed and he is injured and in a coma with an inoperable brain clot. The only way to save him is by miniaturizing a special submarine with a medical crew and pilot and injecting it into his body. So begins our 'Fantastic Voyage' into the human body and its unknown wonders and dangers but, a series of 'accidents' start to plague the crew - is it just bad luck or, is there a saboteur among them? With time running short can they complete the mission or will they fall prey to the body's defenses or their unknown saboteur? An excellent cast and 'state-of-the-art' special effects for the time which won an Oscar® this film is worth a watch and the Blu-Ray is crisp, clear and bright. For those who complain about the fuzzy, soft focus look of the scenes inside the body, these were part of the 'optical effects' not a problem with the film or transfer. A remake using today's state-of-the-art digital effects has been in pre-production hell forever and if any film deserved such treatment this would be it.
