The real thing
Was looking for these in the grocery store and could not find it ...but found it through Amazon of course. The price was a little more than I had hoped for, but I needed it and it was convenient to get rather than the continued search among grocery stores. There are substitutions out there. These are real.

ONOTO
Onoto, also known as annatto, is a vibrant red-orange seed commonly used in Latin American, Caribbean, and Filipino cuisine. It’s prized for its earthy, slightly peppery, and nutty flavor, as well as the warm, rich aroma it imparts to dishes. When incorporated into masa, onoto infuses a subtle, smoky, and nutty flavor, which complements traditional dishes like hallacas, tamales, or arepas. The aroma is warm and slightly herbal, making the masa smell as inviting as it tastes. With Beef or Other Proteins:For beef or stews like carne guisada, onoto acts as both a seasoning and a colorant. It pairs wonderfully with garlic, onions, and spices, adding depth to the dish. The smell is savory and complex, while the taste is rich, earthy, and slightly sweet, elevating the meat’s natural flavors.Culinary Tips:• Toast or simmer the seeds in oil to extract the color and flavor before adding them to your dish.• Combine with other spices like cumin, oregano, or paprika for a robust marinade or sauce.
