works good, well made
one or two strikes and the charred end of the rope is an ember suitable to start tinder or light a cigarette. Pulling back on the cord closes the cap and extinguishes the ember, preserving the char for the next light. great item for fire starting that never runs out of batteries or fuel (the cord will last for your lifetime most likely).

Not the best value for this item from this seller
While this "Trench Lighter" does not produce a flame, it does catch a spark on the charred end of the cotton cord to create an ember. For "bush-crafters" this ember can "blow to flame" suitable tinder like fine dry grasses or "fluffed" jute twine, side-stepping the need to create and carry fragile "char-cloth". Most would just use a cotton cord with a charred end, but this "vintage trench lighter" provides the sparker, cord, and enclosing tube. It's a bit unwieldy to use with a "bird's nest" of tinder, but perhaps with a well-frayed end of a jute cord. Of course, the ember might ignite/transfer to a cigarette or cigar, too, with enough effort. There are similar items available with a lower price.

Amazing thing here
I've never needed to use it yet, But I keep it on hand for an emergency or camping. It's pretty amazing how well this little thing works.

Neet! Works as advertized.
Probably only has an edge on cheap modern stuff in high winds or rain, but it's a neat, rugged little thing for cheap. Great conversation starter. Kinda stinks up a room. Might be great for pipes if you replace the rope with hemp rope, since it can get down in there and stays lit. I would take this over a fire piston any day.

Can’t get it to work
So when I try to use this, it starts a little bit but then won’t allow me to light even a candle. It serves more as a decorative thing now but wish it worked
