This water level meter works well.

I like the device. I can think of a couple improvements. Put a chamfer on the top of the stack of weights to make it easier to get by obstructions. Provide an easy way to dry the sensor between measurements. Add a storage clip for the battery so people have a place to store it without the danger of corrosion. Add a ratcheting device to the reel so you can operate it with one hand. Other than that, it works well.
