The Levitron top is able to levitate in mid-air by harnessing the lifting power produced by two opposed permanent magnets and stabilized in space by using the gyroscopic effect spinning produces. Really amazing!

Top magnet too old
The unit does not work and I believe that the magnet in the top is just too old. They do advertise replacement tops and that gives me a strong suspicion of they do wear out.

Needs lots of practice, but truly amazing! !
I have had a levitron since they first came out in the 1990s. It took me many weeks of practice however I did get veey good at how it operates. As you hold the top your hand will warm it thus making the magnetic field not as strong. My record flight length was slightly over 3 minutes. Definitely a really amazing toy!

Interesting, Takes Practice and Patience
Interesting example of magnetic repulsion. It is very hard to get the top to float off the base magnet but with practice it can be done.
