BLACK+DECKER Hammer Drill, 6.5-Amp, 1/2-Inch (BEHD201)

In the past I’ve used a standard drill when I need to drill a few holes in my brick to hang something. Now that I’m replacing our shutters and they’re hardware and I’ll be drilling a lot of holes, I knew I needed a hammer drill instead. Once this project is complete, the drill will very rarely be used, so I didn’t want to spend a fortune.I picked up this cheap Black + Decker and was surprised how well it worked. I can’t vouch to its longevity but It breezed through this project.

excellent low cost drill....I suspect using for larger projects might not be best suited for this drill, but for small projects, this performs well.

I needed a hammer drill to install some Tapcon screws using a 5/32" masonry drill bit. I tried using my standard drill and it was taking forever and the bit was getting way too hot. I do have a heavy duty hammer drill that uses splined bits but I don't think they even make a 5/32" bit and even if they did it would probably cost as much as this drill. So I decided it would be better off getting a low priced hammer drill since it would be much easier to handle anyway.This B&D did the job nicely. It has plenty of power and is easy to handle with minimal vibration when in hammer mode. It's a nicely made drill and what you would expect at this price point. The keyless chuck is nice, but it does not have a lot of holding power and came loose many times while in hammer mode. There is a chuck lock button that does help. However, it's covered by the detachable handle if you use it in the normal position....which is a bit of a design flaw IMO. I would have preferred a keyed chuck, but could not find one I liked at this price. The fwd/rev switch/knob is a bit awkward and stiff to operate, but again at this price point it's not a big deal.I do like that it has a depth rod, which I used to counter sink holes in the composite decking I was installing so I could use plugs to cover the screw holes. The thing I do not like about the depth gauge is that it is made from plastic versus metal so it bends easily and you can end up going deeper than desired if not real careful. Making it out of plastic was a poor concession to save a few dollars. It is also integrated into the handle in such a way that the knob which secures the handle to the drill also secures the rod - it works okay but is just a weird design. The handle can be placed in many positions so that is nice, but it's a tight fit being plastic on plastic so it's not easy to take off an put back on which I needed to do a lot to access the chuck lock button. Still it does what it's supposed to do.In the end I am pleased with the purchase. B&D is not my tool manufacture of choice, but in this case I am happy with what I got for the money I spent. If you are looking for a low cost hammer drill to use for an occasional project or two this will work nicely and not break the bank. If you anticipate needing a hammer drill often with the features I mentioned; depth gauge, secure chuck...it might not be the best choice.

Just to let you know: A few years back I purchased a 20v Drill from Black and Decker and was amazingly surprised that it worked so well. Especially since it was priced much lower than other brands.This new hammer drill that I recently purchased is actually one of the best investments I have ever made; and; for the price, if you need one you are nuts for not buying this.I have had a large outdoor umbrella on a stand that I previously had bricks stacked on all four legs to keep it from falling over. Within an hour, I drilled 8 holes into cement and screwed them down with 2 1/2 screws. It is now very sturdy and is permanetly connected to the cement slab. (which can be removed if I decide to move it somewhere else.If you have any doubts about Black and Decker drills, forget them. These are fine products well deserving of a 5 rating.

I'm very happy with this drill. I don't need this kind of power often, but when I do, I'm so glad to have it!

Performed really well but the bit gets loose no matter how tight I put it. When drilling concrete it feels dangerous for that reason.

Very powerfull and stable

So Disappointed. The all plastic stability bar started melting while I was drilling my first hole. The whole piece moved off the mount, even after I screwed it in as tight as it would go, and completely melted between the chuck and mount. Even if you only need it for a few holes, I totally recommend going with with a more durable hammer drill or renting one.

Great little hammer drill given the price, did 6 inch tapcons into concrete with ease.

I was skeptical about $50 hammer drill but it does the job. You just need to find a good carbide-tip drill bit and put proper pressure during operation. It sparks a bit but that’s normal as it has a brushed motor. Good for occasional handyman jobs.
