Note-Taking Manual

I am a nationally-certified medical interpreter and teach interpretation in a university program. I wish I had investigated these Interpretrain materials much sooner, because this is an excellent method for teaching note-taking for consecutive interpretation. The author starts with simple exercises, using ordinary words so the student does not have to worry about vocabulary in addition to everything else. Then the exercises become a little longer and more complex. I am now using this workbook in addition to some very good introductory videos explaining how interpreters take notes (by NIck Roche, Andy Gillies and Richard Fleming on YouTube) to give my students a clearer explanation and demonstration of this skill than I have been able to do on my own in the past. We JUST began using it, mid-semester; in the future, I will likely make it a required text in my course.The book would also be useful for self-study, as the author gives detailed instructions on how to perform each exercise, either using the audio CD, or studying alone and making one's own recordings of the exercises, or having them read aloud by a "study buddy."When I was studying for my master's in translation and interpretation, many (many, many!) years ago, our professors did not have materials of this type. (Maybe the 1980's weren't THAT long ago - :-) - but it seems like it when I compare and contrast the available teaching materials from then and now.) I'm quite grateful to all of our colleagues in the interpretation and translation community who have taken the time and effort to provide good, clear materials that are making my job a whole lot easier!

I am currently studying to become a medical interpreter. I found that as I was practicing, my biggest weakness was my note takig. I am also a translator, and I found that the incessant need to write every word down would not get out of my system. All the coaches told me that note taking would come with time, to watch tips on YouTube but that it was a difficult subject to study as everyone developed their own method.Well, I am a nerd, and studying is how I learn things. This book is perfect. It took me through methods, one at a time, and helped me to practice with them. Within 1 week of beginning to practice 20-30 minutes a day with this book, my interpreting coach could note a massive difference in my ability to interpret longer utterances. The methods and the recordings here are extremely helpful to getting me used to note taking and doing it well. I feel much more equipped thanks to this book! Obviously, you will get out of it what you put into it. Read every word, download the audio exercises (they are free), and work through this at a manageable pace (I found 30 minutes a day fit nicely into my study schedule, as I'm already studying vocabulary and doing practice sessions).I highly recommend! Might not work for everyone but if you are a systematic individual you will probably appreciate this resource and glean from it.

I wish i had had this 20 years ago. Never too late. If you MUST take notes and NOT miss a thing, get this one. THANKS to the author!!

The book delivers on it promises, there are quite a few symbols that I will borrow for my interpretations.Buen libro, recomendable.

Love the way they teach you the techniques. Step by step and very efficient. You need to download the lesson from their website and then you can study and practice. Recommend to get a voice recorder to check yourself.

He comprado el manual para complementar mis clases en el máster de interpretación y practicar con ejercicios más sencillos que los de manuales de Gillies o Roderick. Está bastante bien para lo que es. Utiliza de base la verticalidad de Rozan, lo cual es el fundamento básico para la toma de notas. Respecto a los símbolos, algunos me parecieron útiles, otros innecesarios.Se trata de un manual no sólo para intérpretes principiantes, si no también para estudiantes, gente que trabaje en administración...etc. Así que como cubre un espectro tan amplio es normal que no profundice demasiado.La mayoría de los ejercicios se basan en testimonios de juicios, algo de lo que Virginia Valencia tiene mucho material. Los encontré entretenidos.Por otro lado, es verdaderamente cutre que por ese precio no te puedas bajar los archivos mp3 gratis, pero para quien no quiera pagarlos le diré que tampoco vale la pena. Yo hice todos los ejercicios sin audio y me pareció incluso mejor.Es lo que es, aunque el precio es excesivo, teniendo en cuenta que son sólo 10 € menos que otros manuales de interpretación más amplios escritos por autores expertos y profesionales.

This is the book I am looking for because I have little experience in taking notes if I want to be an interpreter. It is very useful book for those who want to work as language interpreters. Highly recommend.
