I purchased this scanner for my 10 year old so he could scan in the QR codes from trading cards for the online Pokemon game. Easy to use, just plug into the PC USB port, point & squeeze. Worked perfectly, saves time & he's thrilled!

I use the NYear barcode reader for doing inventory and for product ordering. It scans all the codes that I need, and more. Placing my laptop onto a cart I can move from shelf to shelf and complete the inventory quickly, accurately, and efficiently.

While there are a few barcode symbologies this scanner doesn't understand (Micro PDF417, Micro QR, Aztec, and some other less common ones) it gets most of the popular ones (pretty much every major 1D barcode, as well as QR, PDF417, Compact PDF417, and DataMatrix. I was even able to read a tiny, low-contrast etched DataMatrix code off a WiFi module (see picture; that's a MicroSD card next to the silvery WiFi module) although it took a couple of scans at different angles to get it to register.For the bulk of the work I needed this for -- automating a manual computer setup process -- this worked great. I've made rather long PDF417 barcodes and it reads them quite quickly and makes the whole process more efficient. The work gets done faster, AND is less prone to errors (i.e. typos).I'm taking off a star for two reasons:* Control manual (with barcodes to enable/disable settings) was not included, and could not be found on their website; I had to email support to get it -- though to David's credit, he was quick in getting that to me when I emailed him.* MaxiCode is not supported, despite the primary product image clearly showing MaxiCode (and even explicitly labeling it as such). Fortunately I don't particularly need MaxiCode, but it's annoying that it was advertised but apparently not supported. Given that the manual doesn't have an enable/disable toggle for MaxiCode either, I can only conclude it's outright not supported, as opposed to just being disabled by default.

Works great for all but the smallest bar codes. Had to upgrade for this reason. If all you are scanning is large barcodes this is a great cheap option. Small , thin barcodes will not scan no matter how long you scan it.

The laser is supposed scan "wide" (several inches) so it can read a barcode. Sometimes this unit's laser turns on but only oscillates so it's about 1 inch wide ... too narrow to read a barcode at all. Had to press the button 5-10 times before it would work. Returned it and got a replacement. The same issue happened with my replacement unit. Didn't always happen ... but perhaps 25% of the time ... enough for me to not recommend this product. As a secondary issue, it comes with barcodes you can scan to turn on/off features. The "Don't append a CR/LF" to the end of the scan failed as well.
