A great follow up to the Switch, for better or worse
The Switch 2 is a worthy follow up to the Switch 1 which makes no stunning changes, no massive improvements but no huge mistakes either. Do you need to buy one now? That depends - its fairly expensive, has few exclusives and is lacking 'that killer product' - y'know, a new Zelda, a Mario, a Fire Emblem or even a Golden Sun remake to absolutely dive in now - yet that will come in time (right Camelot?) The process of moving from Switch 1 to Switch 2 was thankfully very easy. Just put them next to each other, plug them both in and the process was complete in less then 30mins. Where the Switch 2 impresses is its build quality, its lovely new screen and its powerful performance. Lets address all of these pros now: + Build Quality. I previously used a Switch Lite but then moved to the Switch OLED. The Switch 2 is just...just better made. The Joycon magnetic fix is excellent and they remain very stable during gameplay - unlike the OLED where the joycons would 'wiggle'. The Joycons themselves are bigger and genuinely better. Mouse controllers are unique and interesting - maybe we will get more strategy games down the line? Its hard knowing how this will be integrated into games honestly, but could support some interesting developments. The kickstand is great, and even enables vertical play for appropriate games (unlike the OLED which could not be positioned vertically easily with its stand). + Screen Quality Geez, go on Reddit and its filled with howling about the screen quality but it seems great to me - and I came from the OLED Switch 1. Part of it is the huge size of the screen (even if not quite a match for my beloved PS Portal), but its bright, vivid and genuinely makes 'most' older Switch games look better (not always tho, see Xenoblade 1, 2 and 3 - graphics update when?) + Powerful Performance You can easily look up the figures, but the Switch 2 bursts with power, helping games (like Pokemon for example) run much faster, quicker and just better on Switch 2. Load times are almost always quicker. If they can get Cyberpunk running on the Switch 2 in a good state - then the future for the Switch 2 is very exciting. Also, shout out to playing Gamecube classics on it, love some Soul Calibur 2. What's not so good? Unfortunately there are certainly some things to draw out here: - Battery Life Yes, its poor - absolutely. Expect as little as 2hrs on modern Switch 2 games, more on Switch 1 games. Nintendo has absolutely done everything possible to squeeze excellent performance in a form fitting body. Would it have been better to make a bigger, heavier console for more battery life? I would say yes, but just make sure you travel with a little battery pack otherwise (which you can conveniently charge through one of the two USB C ports while continuing to game). + Joycon Delight Lets come back to those joycons, they really are good. Larger, more comfy and with a satisfying click. The mouse controls are great. The rumble is fine (although PS5 duelsense it is not) - To OLED or not? I love OLED screens, and this ain't it. As per my positives though, the LED screen is great - really good, but OLED it ain't. To be fair to Nintendo, with the battery, tech and price point, it was never going to be an OLED. Will there be a 'Switch 2 Pro' further down the line with an OLED screen and better battery? Oh absolutely, no doubts there - along with a Switch 2 Lite. If the OLED is a deal breaker, be patient. - Launch and games Mario Kart is great, lets give it credit. Outside of that though, there is little to recommend that you can't already play elsewhere - and cheaper. See Cyberpunk, Hitman, Street Fighter and so forth. Also that's to say nothing about the price! I've got my fingers crossed for some swift discounts but we shall see... - Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo Sometimes I think few companies hate gamers more then Nintendo. £80 games is madness and we can forever blame Nintendo for this, Mario Kart is great, but that £80 can only be justified as a hustle to get gamers to buy the Switch 2 bundle. Virtual cards, I don't 'hate' them (its more flexible then Steam) but they can't be annoying. Digital download cards for physical games suck, please don't buy these - avoid, avoid, avoid. Nintendo Welcome Tour not being included in the Switch 2 is just petty and dumb. Where is the option to personalise your Switch 2 menu - its just bland white or bland black, ugh. Also 256gb of memory really fills up fast requiring an expensive memory card (also hard to secure currently). Thats before the conspiracy theory that a Switch 2 OLED is on the backburner to get fans to double dip! Nintendo are just...frustrating sometimes, but then, so are most gaming companies. To conclude: Despite my negatives, I think the Switch 2 is worth it, its a great console and the future looks bright - although there is no huge rush to jump in. + BUY IT: = If you have a Switch original or Switch Lite = If you have a large Switch library and play portable more often then not = You are Team Nintendo and don't have access to a PS5/PC to play games like Cyberpunk, Hitman and so forth = You have kids who love family game time. Nothing does this better then a Switch and multiplayer splitscreen. = You view Zelda as the pinnacle of games and would love to dive in again with the upgrade editions (which are A+++) - WAIT FOR IT: = You want to be patient and wait for the Switch 2 OLED (at least 2 years) = You are happy to wait for better exclusives and larger memory cards (allow 6 months to a year) = You are a redditor involved in a boycott (allow 1 to 2 weeks)

It's a great system just it is what it is.
It's still new to me and like all things part of the greatness is how long it last. But as of this moment it is everything you would expect. TLDR: I am a busy person with little time for games these days but Nintendo was among the first systems I had as a child. Atari being the very first for me. So when Nintendo let me down with the Wii, replacing it rather cheaply with the WiiU. I kind of left the console world for a long while. (Nintendo wasn't my only console and likewise not the only one to make me feel betrayed, Sony with the PS3 let me down as I suffered system failures and their deaths at the 1 year mark right after warranty expired. Twice, both with a Gen2 model and their slim). Not until the Switch OLED was released that I warmed up to a console again and decided to buy it. Roughly 9 years in between. With my busy schedule I kind of just bought games and stocked them up. Only really playing with my niece and nephew games like Mario kart and Smash Bros. I did try my hand at Animal Crossing getting through a bit but never making a full year worth of effort. At one point I stored my Nintendo Switch OLED and all the accessories and games... and forgot about it. When the Steam Deck got an OLED version I jumped in on that and it kind of became the system I dedicated any spare time to. My Steam and Epic game library is massive so I kind of wanted to have a system that played it. On road trips I could put a little time into a game or so. Well along comes the Switch 2. Which reminded me I own a Switch OLED. I wasn't too excited, in fact I was a hater with all the legal documentation you agree to just to play. As a little time passed a few circumstances in my job took place where I was suddenly growing nostalgic for Nintendo titles I grew up with. Such as Zelda, Pokémon and Mario games. I currently own many of the Switch titles already just never played them. Eventually any hopes of upgrading my PC were destroyed by the RAM-Aggedon bubble we're in and I took those savings and bought the Switch 2. Specifically because I can play all my Switch titles as is, with some having upgrades for the Switch 2. Since I pay for the online service and expansion (something I was paying and forgot about too) I get those upgrades included free of additional costs. The system is your typical Switch, but with upgrades of course. The screen is much larger. Hell when I saw it, it really feels like Nintendo is having a macho type fight with Valve over their system's screen sizes. The Switch 2 is large by a good size but not thick, it is still very thin and lightweight. Which is nice. It does weigh more than the Switch OLED but way less than the Steam Deck OLED. Screen resolution is very clear and nice, but I can't comment on performance improvements since I really did not play much on the Switch OLED to grow a good sense of how much improvement I could notice playing Switch games on Switch 2. If they have an upgrade the game plays at higher FPS with better looking graphics but that's all I can say. It looks pretty good and performance is good. Ultimately my favorite feature which has absolutely no use for me right now, is the mouse feature. The Joy-Cons can actively be used as an actual mouse. Like a PC. That blows my mind but also... why? What can I use it for? No idea but damn that is cool. The Switch 2 does consume more battery than the Switch OLED but that's kind of listed publicly so you should know what your getting. I do like the added top USB-C which makes it easier to charge while you play undocked. I don't like the fake cartridge games. Be careful when buying physical games, some are just keys to download the game later. I know they claim cartridge storage and speed limits but come on, the technology for flash storage that are extremely large in capacity and speed exist. In fact the Switch 2 can only use MicroSD Express as expansion memory and it is not backwards compatible with slower older MicroSD. MicroSD Express is way faster and able to store way more data than the Switch 2 cartridge (which is faster than Switch). Since the Switch 2 already has MicroSD Express it means it has an internal controller for it, a dedicate bus that could have easily been the Switch 2 main cartridge slot. Or at least Nintendo should license game devs the ability to choose MicroSD Express or Switch 2 cartridge and just avoid the momentary issue of fake cartridges. Aside from that, accessories are a little lacking in a sense. Their Pro Controller is ridiculously expensive and the only pro it offers is that it can turn on your Switch 2 from a sleep state. Every other feature the controller has can be found in 3rd Party controllers. I have an XBox layout 3rd Party controller with Nintendo Switch protocol and the Switch 2 recognizes the button layout on the controller without swapping them around. So far accessories I have for the Switch OLED work on the Switch 2, but not be able to wake the system. Don't know why that is even a "feature" thing. I've read the newer 3rd Party licensed controllers also do not wake the system but I don't have any of them to check. I do enjoy it and I want to make it a system I actually play and not let waste away. Just wish Nintendo would consider some of the issues a little, like allowing MicroSD Express become part of their cartridge system. Oh and end their unrealistic IP restraints on hardware you purchase.
