Great coffee, but expensive for the a few bits of plastic

No metal filter
I’m not happy because it didn’t come with a metal filter. I checked before I bought it and a question was answered that it came with one so I will have to pay over £22 to get one. Left me feeling cheated.

Makes great tasting coffee but needs improvements.......... that I bought extra
I have used the regular size AeroPress for years and I thought it would be great to have a larger one for brewing two cups at once. There are a couple of ways to brew with the regular size: there's the way the instructions say and then there is the "inverted" method which many people including myself like to use. The inverted method has the unit placed upside down on the plunger (partially installed in the body) and then you put your ground coffee in and then the water. This allows the water to sit after stirring for a few minutes to continue saturating the grinds. You then place the cap with filter on top and carefully invert the unit on top of your cup. The XL is too big for this and makes a mess if you try. So, there is a $40 optional "flow cap" that I bought to be able to control the flow in it's normal upright position. That solves one problem..... The second problem is the carafe. It's pretty much useless in my opinion. First, there is no handle so you will burn your fingers if you grab the thin plastic material. Second, the spout design is horrible and makes a mess no matter how careful I am trying to pour it. Another $40 solution: buy a glass carafe (Hario V60) that has a handle and proper pouring spout. So once I spent the additional $80, it became a very nice setup for making some great tasting coffee in a civilized manner. AeroPress needs to offer the aforementioned improvements in a kit form for better customer experiences.

Good, seal became sticky but can be cleaned
Works like a charm. Seal still working perfectly after daily use. Seal got sticky from oils leaching out after it sat for a while. Could clean it up with dish soap and elbow grease.

Fool proof to great coffee
This has made me enjoy coffee now. I could never get it right. This is fool proof, always works, always the best cup. I recently purchased some Aeropress grind and on weekend mornings I now look forward to coffee from my Aeropress. Found out there are plenty of tricks to make more coffee. I always thought it was a two cup maker, but if you increase coffee grinds to 40ish grams you can dilute the coffee with hot water and make about 6 servings. Will never use another coffee maker.

Very happy with the AeroPress XL
I learned about the AeroPress through Black Rifle Coffee. I read good things about it and wanted to purchase it, but the standard size AeroPress only makes a 10oz or smaller cup. Once I found the XL version (makes up to 20oz cup), I had to try it. I am very happy with it! The first few tries using it I was a little disappointed. It seemed like the same coffee that was very "strong" in a regular coffee maker was bland in the AeroPress. But then I realized a couple of things: 1) I was not using the AeroPress correctly (see the end of the review for the method I learned), 2) once I started using it correctly, the coffee was smooth and much less acidic tasting that the "strong" brew I was making before. I am loving the AeroPress XL now. I've made a few poor over brews and some regular coffee maker brews since I started using the AeroPress just to contrast and compare and I like the AeroPress the most with pour over a close second. What I learned about the best brew I personally found using the AeroPress is from Lance Hedrick in his video titled “A Very Good Aeropress Recipe, Maybe the Best”. I heat the water and bloom the grinds for 30 seconds. Then I fill the AeroPress to the appropriate line and put the plunger in as directed. I then wait 2 minutes and then very slowly do the press. This simple process makes such a big difference.

Aeropress XL
A very nice coffee maker. The clear version is attractive, which justifies its $10 USD higher cost. Aeropress is basically a French press that is so much easier to clean and maintain that it’s a no brainer. But does the XL do anything better than the original? It’s a toss up. If you use the same amount of coffee in each to make a volume larger than the press, you need to dilute the concentrate with hot water. So far, the volume of the press doesn’t seem to matter much. The smaller one with more hot water dilution makes the same coffee as the larger one with less hot water dilution. The larger one is nice in that the final cup needs less dilution, but the dilution between the smaller and larger doesn’t seem to make much difference in quality. If you are making larger quantities, like 1L+, get the large one. For everyday single use the smaller is fine. For two or more, get the large. I am happy with both large and small.
