Needs that bottom lid!
My wife would not miss this elegant peppermill anymore! We think this gadget is really great. However, we bought our peppermill when it still came with a bottom lid. We feel this is a mandatory part. It happens quite often that one inadvertently touches the top button when getting the peppermill out of the cupboard or putting it back in after the meal. Of course, it starts to grind instantly. So what happens when there is no lid at the bottom: you have that pepper (or salt) on your floor or wherever. Quite an annoying prospect indeed. I'd rather pay an extra dollar or so to have that lid included again. (This is assuming it is still missing as some reviews here indicate.) There is certainly no problem that the batteries are no longer included. These are readily available everywhere, whereas you'd have a hard time finding a lid that fits. These things are a bit top-heavy (because of the batteries) so they tend to tumble if you hit them a bit. But that is only a minor problem. This peppermill has served us for several years now, with only one change of batteries so far. So, if you can get it with that bottom lid, buy it. It's great. The light is more of a gag than a necessity in our opinion. But kids love it!

Quality has declined.
We have purchased 3 or 4 sets of these salt & pepper mills over the past 5 years or so, for personal use and as gifts. They are great for people with arthritis and the lazy amongst us, who find it too exerting to turn the mills manually:).Ours have been dropped a few times and were getting temperamental, so we ordered a new set. After a couple of weeks the drive shaft on the pepper mill motor must have snapped, as the motor would turn but would not turn the grinder. We got a replacement and the motor stopped working after about a week. The next replacement had a motor that was dead on arrival. Amazon declined to replace it again but refunded the cost. The problem with that was that it left us with the salt mill which was now 1 day past the return period. I found replacement motors for $10 at kitchenbasics.com, which is a division of MIU. I also emailed MIU outlining my problems and they cancelled the charges from kitchenbasics and sent me 2 motors at no charge. I am pleased with the response from both Amazon and MIU, but....no one, either at MIU or Amazon could tell me what, if any the manufacturer's warranty is. So, technically, you are on your own after the 30 day return period from Amazon.I found almost identical mills at Sam's Club last week for $9.95 per Set of 2. I bought 5 sets. So far, they perform and look as good as the MIU units that are $100/set. The brushed stainless finish on the Sam's version is a little rougher but, for 1/10 the cost, they are great.

Works for me!
I've tried all kinds of mills and grinders. I like lots of pepper! Usually my hand would give out from twisting before I got even close to the amount of pepper I wanted - especially seasoning a large pot of soup or stew. The highly rated ATK "Rabbit Ears" manual job was a flop - very slippery - took two hands - and took forever.I read mixed reviews on this MIU but thought it worth a try, knowing Amazon's return/exchange policy. So far, so good. One complaint was the coarseness of the grind - even on "fine". Well, that's "fine" with me 'cause I prefer pepper you can see and feel. I'm using the Five Peppercorn Mix (It's probably offered below) - it's closest to the McCormick Peppercorn Medley - robust and aromatic. The MIU does slow down and complain a bit on some of the toughest nuggets, but it soldiers thru. And most importantly puts out a lot of pepper - FAST! Yes, the small reservoir does have to be filled often - but that's fine as I keep my stock of peppercorns frozen so I always have fresh in the mill.I would recommend with the reservations noted above.

I'm spoiled.
MIU Electric Peppermill I'm about to purchase my 5th unit for a present. We've had no particular problems with the functions of any of the 4 units I've purchased, although the first one quit working entirely after only a few months. I hesitated to buy a second mill but loved the function so much that I decided to give it another chance. The second mill has worked well for perhaps a year and a half. Those I've given to others are still workin well.I have been sufficiently spoiled buy using mine that I'd probably continue buying them if they only lasted about a year but fortunately the average life-span now seems to be significantly better than that.I wouldn't recommend "BRAND X" alkaline batteries. I tried some on the my firt peppermill but they were insufficient to power it.Buy the way, it's important to keep the electric peppermill out of the reach of 3&4 year-olds unless you want piles of ground pepper in unfortunate locations!

Piece of crap
Has never ground the pepper evenly....on fine setting, it still kicks out chunks of pepper. Mine just started freezing up - after only 15 months. Can't even use it anymore. Don't waste your money !

Dropped it in sink full of water...still working. Tough pepper mill.
This is a great pepper mill. I bought it in 2010 from amazon and it is still working fine now in 2014. I have dropped this pepper mill numerous times on the floor but it is still working. I even dropped it in a sink full of water in the kitchen. After it took a bath, I took the batteries out and let it dry for two days before using it again. Boy was I surprised that it still worked...that was 6 months ago.I feel compelled to give a review on this grinder as it has been a good kitchen addition for me.It is stainless steel and glass. It takes 6 AAA batteries. By the way, I put a very small piece of electrical tape over the contacts for the bulb, to turn it off, to make the batteries last longer (I did not need the light). The contacts are readily observable when you go to put pepper in the glass body.Although many people in the USA will denigrate the french for one thing or another, I have stand up and say the french got it absolutely correct in regards to this pepper mill.
