I do not read comic books. I got the first volume of The Maxx because I enjoyed the cartoon so much - and volume 1 is almost exactly like the cartoon. The same is with the first half of volume 2 - then it starts to expand in strange and interesting rhelms! Now - I can't help it, I'm ordering volume #3, I'm hooked.

Raging At The ISZs...
Volume two of Sam Kieth and Bill Messner-Loebs' singularly surreal exploration of sanity, identity and trauma, "The Maxx" finds our titular anti-hero and his obsession, Julie Winters, wandering in an 'outback' - but is it real or are they now merely experiencing the 'folie a deux'? You'll have your answers (and more questions) by the end of the volume.Along the way you'll discover why Julie is a pathological hoarder; why one should be suspicious of talking wads of clay; why being the assistant to an evil genius is not all it's cracked up to be; how hard life can be when you have to use a neck-brace to keep your head attached to your body and why grieving is an ongoing process. My personal favourites from this volume are the singularly disturbing "Fairy Tale" and the final issue which explores the travails of the grandfather of Julie's adolescent friend, Sara, as he attempts to overcome his grief at the death of his wife by escaping into the outback.Poignant, hilarious, breath-taking stuff. Brilliantly written and drawn.
