These work great with very old Apple Cinema Displays (which you can't stop using because they still have a better picture than most).Contrary to other review, my monitor was automatically detected when I plugged it in. I was using this with a DisplayLink USB video adapter to get a third display on my MacBook Pro 2010. The combination worked great till I upgraded the laptop to OSX a Mavericks 10.9, which has major issues with USB video (no fault of this device).Be sure this comes with the power supply (nog pictured). It's useless without power.

Not as functional as the Apple device
The Dr. Botts device is smaller, but not as functional as the Apple device: it doesn't provide a signal to the laptop letting it know the cable has been plugged in, and therefore requires you to manually 'detect monitors' to detect the new screen - and worse, doesn't detect when it -unplugs-, meaning you may lose the ability to find your menu bar. I wish I'd purchased the Apple adaptor when I needed a new one.
