Lettering and Modern Calligraphy for Beginners: Creative Lessons to Learn Hand Lettering, Brush Lettering, and Modern Calligraphy

I plan to get colored pencils and use my newfound artistic ability with calligraphy to highlight important words in my Bible.
Most schools today have stopped teaching students to write in cursive. They think keyboarding will help students succeed in careers and school more than cursive will, and so time is spent teaching that instead. But I taught 3rd graders how to write in cursive for many years, and I surely hate to see this become a lost art. That is why I find the book “Lettering and Modern Calligraphy for Beginners” so interesting. It teaches calligraphy, which is really fancy cursive, beginning with the classic lower case alphabet. Every section in the book has space to practice, and it brought back sweet memories to see the old-style practice sheet, with the dotted line running between two solid lines. I can still hear myself saying, “Stay in the lines!”The book takes us through different calligraphy styles, showing what would work best with pointed pens, ink pens, fine tip pens, brushes or brush pens, and chalk. First we learn to write each letter individually, and then we move to connecting the letters, and finally the author demonstrates how to make word pictures by combining styles.A new trend among Bible readers is to create “visual notes” right in their Bible. I am still practicing on the lined pages in this book, but I plan to get some colored pencils and start using my newfound artistic ability with calligraphy to highlight important words or phrases in the margins of my Bible.

I was super eager to try out lettering and see what this trend is all about and am very happy with this book. It has easy to understand instructions with examples that show you step by step all the techniques, plus special tips and tricks. There is practice pages incorporated to trace and train for every new lesson, plus a whole log of blank practice to practice on your own.

best value I think
I hemmed and hawed over which book to buy to learn lettering since I'm a beginner, and went with this one because it was such a good value. I'm glad I did, this was WONDERFUL! So much better than I expected for only about six dollars when other books are 10, 20, or more!

Instructions good; paper not so much
This book is set up to practice in the book itself. But, the paper is not set up for practice. It absorbs the ink so fast it it impossible to draw thin up strokes unless you have a small nib brush pen. A brush like the Tombow Dual will not work.
