No surprises
This is what you’d expect for a toned multimedia sketchbook. Binding is nice. Sketchbook is soft and has a good feel to it. Paper is heavy enough to handle gouache and ink but still a thin comfortable book. Watercolor with heavy washes would do better in an actual watercolor book. But this is great as a mixed media book. I’ve used charcoal, colored pencil, wax pastel, ink and gouache with it so far. Perfect for field studies and doodles. The tone color is lovely. Smooth paper

Love love love for gouache!!
I love these NOVA Stillman & Birn sketchbooks for gouache! I’ve bought all the different sizes. I use binder clips to hold the pages together when using it. The color and texture of the pages is perfect. I use the front and back of each page. I put down at least 2 layers of gouache and each page holds up very well. 10/10 recommend!!

Surprised
The beige paper is heavy enough for ink, light gouache and water color, water based brushpens with no bleed through to the other side. The paper is smooth so pencils can be used but there isn't much tooth. Also alcohol pens bleed through, but so make a great base layer for gouache if you dont mind the bleed though. I haven't tried acrylics on it. But if you like mixed media, fountain pen ink, ink pens, gel pens, gouache, the paper color really makes the colors pop. And although the paper does buckle with wet media, if you're not working in a ton of layers, you can some neat effects. I've found sakura pens and india ink dont smudge on the paper and look awesome over the gouache compared to just the paper.

Great Sketchbook
The Stillman & Birn Nova Series Sketchbook is a great sketchbook. It is described to have medium grain paper, but I would say it is a bit on the smooth side. But with that said it responded to every medium I have used on it thus far. It handles pencils and colored pencils extremely well, and has impressed me thoroughly with how well it responds to the various fountain pens I've used. The ink lines I've laid down with these fountain pens, as well as fine liners and technical pens, show no signs of feathering or bleed through. When using alcohol-based markers, however, there is some slight bleed through initially, which seems to disappear after a few minutes. For a paper that isn't designed specifically to handle such markers, the S&B Sketchbook performs admirably. My only complaint is that I wish the beige tone of the paper were slightly darker so that white colored pencil or white ink pop off the page more. Even still, this is a great product and I highly recommend this to any artist who want to experiment on toned paper--a great way to push and pull tonal value.

best paper
the top 3 sketchbook brands of canson, moleskine, and stratmore brands have a new competitor, because ...stillman & birn notebooks are the best. stillman imo is #1 in terms of notebook paper quality. for a heavyweight paper, the leaf is quite thin. paper absorbs grahite from pencil amazingly well. better than any paper ive tried. only canson pastel paper is more responsive to pencil marks from my experience.

Beautiful tinted paper.
This is the first tinted paper I have used and I love it. I had a photo of a cliff face where most of the color was the same light tone broken up with crags, crevices and sparse vegetation, I thought a beige / tan paper would make a great background color, which it did, all I had to do was add the details with a wash for the sky. I am still very new to watercolors, so some areas of the finished painting turned out very nice, while other areas - not so much. My lack of expertise however does not change the fact that I really love this paper, the soft cover is very nice and the book allows the paper to lay flat. I bought the 8X10 which I think is a perfect fit for my paintings, but the size is a personal preference.

Super verarbeitet
Klare Kaufempfehlung.
