Takes you to another time
I love the Little House on the Prairie book collection. This book gives you a very different view of what small pleasures are missed with modern comforts! I’m old enough to have seen my Great Grandmother prepare meals in some of the examples provided along with the recipes. It hard getting through all the word defining at the beginning but then the author gives home life stories that I simply love! Peepers might find this very interesting read for true how too’s.

A must for Appalachian studies
I loved this book, I could hear my own grandmother voice in the words written in this book. You will never hear the true Appalachian words spoken again, that time and those people are all long gone. People that believed in their own honor and a hand shake was all a man need to made a deal with someone. I hate to hear the word "hillbillies' because the picture in your head in that of some Hollywood writer fictitious character with no shoes or teeth and to stupid to talk...Verna Mae Slone said "I want my grandchildren to know they had folks to be proud of a way of life soon to be forgotten. Brave, sturdy, hard working, God fearing people, misunderstood by outsiders because their customs and speech belong only to them." This book you help you to understand us a little bit. (I hope)

True tales of Mountain Folk
I’ve seen many stories over the years that put down the mountain way of life and made us out to be stupid or lazy and that is miles away from the truth. Verna Mae gives a true picture of the hard working people I remember. I was surprised by how much mountain characteristics and language I have retained over the years. It makes my heart happy.

Country-speak
I have read Verna Mae Slone's book What My Heart Wants To Tell and enjoyed it very much. I expected to enjoy How We Talked as well. I was born in the same mountains where she was born some years later. She describes a lifestyle and a way of talking that is familiar to me and my 93 year-old father. As we no longer live in Kentucky, it is something that we miss very much. Her book takes us back home.

Wonderful Appalachian narrative
Verna Mae Slone was a wonderful writer who chronicled life in Appalachia extraordinarily well...because she lived it. I highly recommend this book.

Comprehensive and a great read
I have added this to my collection of reference books for a project I'm working on. I add it with joy, because it was honestly written and very well done.
