Mullenix Is Regarded As One of the Greats!
I have to preface this review by saying that I'm perplexed that non-falconers would be reviewing this book. Nevertheless, please ignore any negative feedback this book gets. I say that being a master falconer myself with over 19 years experience flying a variety of broadwings and longwings. Somehow, at this late date I've decided to try my first American Kestrel. This book served exactly what purpose it was meant to. I wanted an expert's opinion on equipping, selecting, training, and ultimately hunting with an American Kestrel. Matt Mullenix is that expert.I had the pleasure of meeting the author of this book over 20 years ago at the Florida Hawking Meet when I was a would-be falconer. Unlike many master falconers, he was nice and very accommodating around his birds. He readily shared information and allowed me to tag along with him and his Kestrel for some hunting. It is an experience that I treasure to this day. After I became a falconer and had a horrible experience at my first hawking meet with my bird, I received a phone call from Matt Mullenix. He invited me to come out to the Tallahassee area and do some hawking with he and another great falconer, Brian Millsap. He also apologized for the incident that occurred, even though he wasn't there and had nothing to do with it. I have NEVER forgotten it and I never will. I'm 100% sure that I'm the falconer I am today because of Matt and some of the other greats I had the pleasure of interacting with over the years.Prospective falconers - add this book to your list of essential texts. I put it right up there with North American Falconry and Hunting Hawks and The Falconer's Apprentice for its insight into the sport you are considering being a part of. I think this book will give you the perspective you need on considering the Kestrel as your apprentice bird and taking game with it.

Great primer - or refresher - on Kestrels in modern falconry.
As a former falconer and raptor rehabilitater looking to get back into this amazing partnership with wild birds of prey, I am loving this book. I’m looking to enter a mentor ship with a local falconer, and this is a good way to refresh my skills. Well written and practical, and the author obviously cares passionately about the birds and the continuation - and modernization - of this ancient sport. Really well done.

HEY APPRENTICE! YOU NEED THIS!
A WONDERFUL book about American Kestrels. I found it most illuminating and I especially liked it since most Falconry books give American Kestrels a poor representation. I found examples of weight charts as well as hood patterns helpful and appreciated. It is not a large book, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for by being one of, if not THE best book I have read about American Kestrels in falconry. This is definitely a must read for anyone in wanting to become a falconer, especially as an American Apprentice.

Dull, but accurate, and informative
The information in this book is GOLD, but it is not very attention-grabbing. Be prepared for your attention to wander. It is a MUST-READ for anyone considering a kestrel.
