Excellent!
I read reviews that said their Black Granite Mortar &Pestle arrived broken. Well a sale prompted me to purchase it anyway. And I'm Glad I took a chance, because this is Beautiful and Sturdy and exactly what I wanted. The outside is shiny and polished and the inside is rough, as is needed to grind items. The size is just right. 7 inch diameter is quite big enough when the item is this heavy! Lol! By the way, this was Packaged Impeccably, in that it was Triple Boxed and Bubble Wrapped. Unless someone drops this from very high up or drops it on tile or concrete, it will not break! It's Solid Granite! Now this is my comment so far... If something goes wrong I'll update this review at the time. But I sincerely doubt I'll have to make any changes to my review! I will also add, You Must Season /Condition the Mortar & Pestle! I believe crushing dry rice several times will get it ready for use. But do your research and precisely follow directions for the type of stone/material in which your mortar and pestle are derived. An item like this is an investment. I haven't always had one. This is a very useful in the kitchen. I'm looking forward to enjoying this for decades.

Greatly sturdy, heavy-duty kitchen tool
There's a lot to be said for doing things the old-fashioned way. . . it brings us back toward our roots -- and somewhere back there in time, our ancestors used tools just like this granite mortar and pestle to grind herbs, spices, and other things (except theirs was built-in to the granite or rock, whereas ours are conveniently portable). I am very impressed with the weight and size of the mortar -- and love how the inside is rough to allow the breaking down of fibers and leaves. The bottom of the pestle is also textured roughly like this to help in the breakdown of materials. This will definitely give your arm a workout!! I've used it for dried flowers, seasonings, and breaking down fruits into a puree. It is fun to use and is a great reminder of how hard our ancestors had to work to bring good meals to the table. I've included a photo with a quarter on the edge of the bowl to show scale, though I'm not sure the angle of the photo does it justice! If you've been on the fence about getting one, now's the hour -- get this, and you will not be disappointed.

PERFECT ! No cracks. Great size shape and weight.
I cannot express how happy I was to open the box and see this mortar and pestle. Perfect. The right color the right shape. I have looked for a very long time for "THE ONE" and this is it. It is surprisingly heavy. I can understand how one could have been dropped in transit and broken. Mine wasn't so I am happy. I am also satisfied that with the " proper seasoning " it will do just what I need it to without grit, sand or flaking into my food. If not I will be back with an edit. Thanks to Fox Run for an item that was exactly what was hoped for and expected.

Poor packaging
Poor product packaging and box is flimsy - cardboard is soft, due to this my mortar has a little chip on outer edge. I decided not to return/ replace for its not visible to one’s eye! It’s heavy !!! Amazon delivered it in a paper envelope!!!

Effective, efficient, and beautiful.
I've thoroughly enjoyed using this mortar and pestle. It's a good size, can find around 2-3 cups in volume. Picture attached is the difference between red curry paste attempted in a food processor vs w mortar and pestle. It very quickly smears things to my desired consistency, vs running the food processor for prolonged period of time and still having a fine chop. More recently have been mashing ginger, green onion, garlic and salt together to go on chicken or fish--super tasty and simple mix! Seasoning it was fairly straightforward, spent 20-30 minutes or so pulverizing dry rice followed by salt w oil to be sure there wasn't any rock dust still. It's heavy, but then it is a rather large chunk of rock! It's beautiful too, I am very happy w my choice of the dark granite.

Very high quality and perfect size
I've already used this multiple times and can't believe with how much I cook I've never had one before. It's a perfect size and large enough to make dips, guacamole, etc. High quality and heavy! As with any mortar and pestle, don't forget to "season" it before use though!

FINALLY!! The perfect mortar and pestle!!
I have been searching for a large, solid, unpolished on the inside mortar and pestle for a LONG time. Most are either too small, made of a material I don't want (marble is cool but not as hard as granite and gets stained by turmeric when making curry pastes). This is finally the answer! The thing is large (7" outer edges if you get the large one)!! It holds about 2 cups and it big enough to crush medicine, salt and paper, make garlic and ginger pastes and curry pastes for a table-sized meal. FINALLY!!!! Some of the reviewers are critical of this item. Those people have never used a mortar and pestle. As with ANY mortar and pestle made of anything other than wood, before use, you MUST properly season it, or it won't work, and you'll grind pieces of rock into your food. Yuck. After you purchase it, put a quick google search of "how to season a mortar and pestle", and you'll see you have to put in a little elbow grease. We spent 24 seasoning ours, and we are SOOOOOOO happy with it. I've already used it for grinding peppercorns, garlic into paste, and some chili peppers into powder. AWESOME!!!! And for the price, if it breaks, I won't be too sorry to have to buy another. GREAT product. A kitchen essential. Hoping it'll last a lifetime!

Top quality. Looks and works great.
Great size and weight, and really good production quality. The polished areas are really smooth. The unpolished areas are a bit rough at first, but all I did was grind it smooth just by using it empty and dry, rubbing all the unpolished surfaces, until the surfaces wore smooth and stopped producing dust. It was a bit of work but not bad, and well worth it. Then I ground some white rice because that's what all the seasoning info says to do, but I suspect it's just to show you by turning grey that it's picking up the dust. Anyway so far I use it to grind nuts and seeds for homemade breads and breakfast cereal, and it works better than I expected it to. I should have got one years ago.
