Thicker Than Ice: A Sailing Family Finds Their Place at the Edge (Five Oceans)

A deeply captivating journal of a family sailing through the northwest passage
Few sailing vessels attempt to cross the northwest passage, fewer still complete it. This journal is an enthralling, and honest account of one family taking on this challenge. Those that have read Orca will enjoy the new adventures in this book. John writes in a very matter of fact style, the drama not needing anything more to captivate the reader. I’ve enjoyed reading this book greatly and feel I have shared in both the sadness and joy experienced by this incredible family.

one of my favorite sailing authors!
John Penington’s first book, Orca, surprised me countless times. It was laugh out loud funny, generous, and insightful. I’m sure it inspired many more people than us to cross oceans in a small sailboat.Thicker Than Ice continued with the awesomely sarcastic wit, stories of rebuilding a neglected but worthy boat, and as always, loving, affectionate descriptions of family and friends as Sentijn made it way west through the Northwest Passage. Amazing story!

Fantastic book!
We met Kara, John, and Dean on Goose Island, BC, which we seemed remote to us - little did we know! They almost shyly let slip that they'd sailed the Northwest Passage and wrote a book about it. I picked up a copy as soon as we got home and read it cover to cover in three days - the preparations were brilliantly told and I couldn't put it down once the Northwest Passage began. My heart was in my throat for the gales and I cried real tears for S at Cape Bathurst. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone interested in sailing, the arctic, or just grand adventures with brilliant storytelling.

An adventure wrapped in resilience and grit
This first person account draws you in as you become a member of the crew. Though I sat in my warm sun filled chair on my porch, I shuddered feeling the bone chilling fog as the captain and crew attempted to slip through the sea ice.Well written, this book captures the struggles, fears, and triumphs of their Northwest Passage. This book is a must read for anyone thinking of casting off the lines and setting sails on an adventure.
