Now in full colour, the third edition of this well established book provides a readable and highly illustrated overview of the aspects of geology that are most significant to civil engineers. Sections in the book include those devoted to the main rock types, weathering, ground investigation, rock mass strength, failures of old mines, subsidence on peats and clays, sinkholes on limestone and chalk, water in landslides, slope stabilization and understanding ground conditions. The roles of both natural and man-induced processes are assessed, and this understanding is developed into an appreciation of the geological environments potentially hazardous to civil engineering and construction projects. For each style of difficult ground, available techniques of site investigation and remediation are reviewed and evaluated. Each topic is presented as a double page spread with a careful mix of text and diagrams, with tabulated reference material on parameters such as bearing strength of soils and rocks. This new edition has been comprehensively updated and covers the entire spectrum of topics of interest for both students and practitioners in the field of civil engineering. Review: Good reference for studying for FG exam. - Excellent little reference book for helping me to study and prepare for the F.G. exam. Review: Excellent service - Book arrived exactly as described and on time - excellent service

Good Intro to Both Geology and Engineering Geology
As a professional geologist that spent much time associating and working with engineers in the petroleum industry I always was interested in a combination of the 2 disciplines. I saw a similar text to this in the book store of a very highly thought of engineering school the the US and didn't pick it up but wish I had. The coverage of geology is pretty thorough if basic and more descriptive than quantitative (except for a few chapters in the middle on rock and soil strength). To cut to the chase what I like about this book is the abundant real-world examples which are included. If nothing else any professional working in this discipline should come away with a sense of striving for a thorough understanding of the geology and probable mechanical rock strengths before beginning any engineering project.

A great introduction and an even better refresher or general reference.
I wish I had found this book when I was still teaching engineering geology. Each section is a two-page synopsis of a particular topic with pertinent charts and graphics, and serves as an excellent introduction, refresher, or reference for that topic. The author has done a great job of distilling each topic down to the essence of what is important for understanding the applied aspects of the topic. The bibliography in the book is tied to each chapter, so if one needs to delve deeper, they have a place to go.

Adequate for those practising in related fields
The book provides concise information on the main topics associated with Engineering Geology and related disciplines. It is not highly technical, which some may consider a negative, however as a casual reference for a practising engineer in a related field e.g. Geotechnical engineering or civil engineering, it is sometimes good not to get bogged down in the detail. For this reason though, the book would not serve undergraduate study particularly well, as there is a fair a amount of assumed knowledge required to get the greatest benefit from this book.

Great "Geological Engineering" Reference Book!!!
This is a great Geological Engineering Reference Book for professionals and beginners alike. I use it in practice as well as teaching. The 3rd Edition with color is very nice. The graphics are wonderful and really help beginners "see" the in situ concepts.

Nice choice
Small, comprehensive, nice coloured figures and sketches. It is very good to acquire a general idea but not if you want to luxuriate.

Foundations to the very core.
This is a short but sweet book detailing all the fundamentals of engineering geology. Each 2-page spread gives a concise and information-dense overview of a particular topic (and almost all the main topics are covered). The text is beautifully illustrated throughout in full colour with intelligible diagrams, tables and figures. In my opinion this is the perfect core-text for a university course in engineering geology and should be on the book shelf of every English-speaking Engineering Geologist to remind them of the basics.

Nice book
I purchased this book as I do not have my old books of geology anymore. I must say that it was worth to invest the money!

Don't buy the Indian edition
"Now in full colour" says the back cover, but the Indian edition is in black and white, presumably to discourage export to richer countries. The lack of colour makes both the drawings and the photographs much less clear. For example, many of the photographs have one or two people in them for scale, but in the black-and-white pictures you don't see them unless you look carefully. As for the content, this book seems to be a summary of what every civil engineer should know about geology. It does not work all that well as an introduction. The book has 39 chapters and each chapter is allocated a two-page spread. Because the space for each topic is fixed, the information is given as brief points with little explanation. But if you already learnt this stuff earlier and want a quick refresher, this might be for you.
