Not your average install…
I know this boot is made to fit a new beetle, but I really liked the leather wrapped knob and wanted it for my golf.This boot and the golf’s boot are quite different, but the knob and how it secures to the shifter are identical.So I bought two. I got this one, and a cheap boot that fits my car.When I received the parts, I removed the boot part from this knob and then installed the boot that fits the golf, then installed the knob on my shifter and stretched the boot onto the original VW plastic insert piece.Everything worked perfectly, and now I have a nice leather wrapped beetle knob on a golf boot and I couldn’t be happier!

Fits 2007 VW New Beetle
Some reviewers had a hard time installing for some reason.Basically just lift up the old boot from the base over the top of the shift knob. Use large channel locks or pliers to break off the metal clamp. The whole assembly lifts off.Place the new shift boot on and press down on the knob firmly. With the boot up over the knob squeeze the metal clamp (included) with pliers to secure it. Finally bring the boot back down and push it into place.

Good product
This was a good replacement for a worn out shifter of my 98 VW Beetle. Looks good and like original.

Do not buy this shift knob, save yourself the frustration!
It took close to a month to receive the package which is understandable since its coming from China, would I have known that I would never would have purchased. Do not believe all the positive ratings, it does not fit the specified vehicle model, in this case a 1999 new Beetle. The shift knob was not trimmed to the specific depth thereby not allowing the shift knob clamp to be secured in the appropriate notch. I thought the measurement error was minor so I tried pounding it in with a rubber mallet thinking it would settle in but to no avail, frustrated I gave it a heavier whack and it cracked the plastic shift logo. That’s it I thought I’m stuck with this crap which at this point I’m unable to return. To make it fit, I had to drill and ream the knob in order to fit the shift lever. Avoid this product, there are other products better made than this one.

Very low quality—not real leather
Product arrived with surface defects and tears on surface of the “leather.” The material is much, much lower quality than even cheap vinyl. The “leather” layer is super, super thin. I had high hopes, but no: quality is not wort the money and would actually be a waste of my labor to install even if the product was free.
