A useful book
This book is old. Really old. It has a copyright date of 1988 and the graphics and layout are obviously dated. I also didn't like that a book titled 'tailoring' is focused solely on making women's clothing. That aside, I still love the way that the book is organized. There are plenty of photos that explain how to and why, and also give you an idea of what your project is supposed to look like as you work on it. I don't pay much attention to the actual fashions in the book because those will obviously change a lot every few years. What doesn't change are the fundamentals of how to make a garment, the tools you need, and how to use them. These latter areas are where this book shines. If you're new to making men's clothing you will need to get something else to go with this. Even if you're very experienced with making clothing, this book teaches you how to create clothes that have a more refined and finished look---the type of clothing that no one would be able to tell that you made yourself on a sewing machine at home.

A great visual guide for tailoring.
Another great Singer sewing book. Good explanations and lots of pictures. Yes, these books are dated now, but if you can look past the old styles of clothing, these books are the ones you'll grab over and over because they are very well-written and make everything so clear.

Great Reference
Tailoring by Singer is a great reference for those who wish to learn about tailoring. It's old enough that it contains information about hand and machine sewing interfacing when many of the new books just show using fusible interfacing. The book has very clear pictures that are easy to follow. I would not use their method of sewing welt pockets. Refer to Palmer and Pletsch (book and DVD) for a "foolproof" method which you could also use for bound buttonholes. The book doesn't show how to "bag" a lining which is an easy way to attach a lining if your jacket does not have a vent. Again, "Jackets for Real People" (DVD and book) clearly outlines the bagging technique. Despite these drawbacks, I am a satisfied customer and would recommend purchasing.

Fine, not great, but what most home sewers will be looking for when they start to approach tailoring.
It's fine. I was stocking up on books for the library in my workroom and thought "Why not?"As I read, I got a song sense of deja-vu. Wait a minute...This is exactly the same book as "Tailoring, The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket"So the ISBN #s for this book are 0-86573-241-8 and 0-86573-242-6The ISBN#s for the other book are 978-1-58923-609-7 and 1-58923-609-2These are the same book, from the illustrations to the pagination. Same same same. Same. All of that is fine for me, but I can imagine folks would get a little grumpy if they double bought like that.Still a decent book though.

Awesome
The book is in great shape the only downer was there was writing inside the front and back cover "property of" but easily more character for the book. Shipping was fast even with the free 3-15 shipping. All the pages are crisp, neat, and in tact. I was very happy with this purchase. The book it self has a lot of easy to follow steps with plenty of pics

Wanted Alterations more than Tailoring
The material seems fine but I thought it would include making alterations to existing clothing rather than from the beginning up. Should have checked it out more. Reasonable enough price not to send it back. Still looking for a book on alterations and not making old clothing into new fads. Just changing sizes of clothing to fit smaller body.

An excellent starter text on Tailoring
A surprisingly excellent book, in very compact form, on a complicated subject. A very good starter text for the advanced sewer with little to no other exposure to traditional tailoring. The photo demos of the procedures are also quite well done. I usually prefer good line drawings, however in this case the photos are actually better.
