Does this pedal in a circular motion or does it pedal back and forth.  One of my knees doesn't have much range of motion so I need something like step

Thank you so much for clarifying our earlier response! Yes, the FreeStep is designed with a patented stride that is more linear, like a stepping motion or leg press, not circular or elliptical. The position of the upper and lower body really helps to protect the knees and weight-bearing joints. And you want to be sure to set the seat height correctly for your body type, keeping your ankles in front of your knees as you stride. The variable magnetic resistance will be helpful to you – start with minimum resistance to work on your range of motion, and then gradually increase over time as you want to build strength and endurance.

How hard is it to put together?

Warning do not destroy the box. It's hard to put together and it is very heavy, solid steel, rust was already on it.
 You will be lucky if all the pieces fit, On mine, the top of the machine did not fit the base. They asked me to find friends who could push the other side or try a hammer. Well, I do not have friends who can bend large steel bars. Then they made me wait for new heavy steel replacement parts twice that did not fit either, I was worried because I only had 30 days to return. You have to remove all the hardware and lift over 100 pounds to put it back in the box.
