I've been sharpening free hand with files (without guide) for 20 plus years. Could get a good "working edge" but neverlike new chain.Like someone on here said, "watch a couple you tube videos and learn how to sharpen a chain" … good advise.Especially some of the videos from old timers, that have been doing it for a long time.Put the bar in a vise, use the guide (the long flat bar with the file in the center) take your time, keep the file flat, the bar in the vise horizontal, do both sides of the chain with the same amount of strokes (3 -5 or more if the chain is really smoked) clean the file every few links. Hit the tops of the center links with the flat file once or twice.And … cuts like new. Truly was amazing how well it cut, especially since the chain I started out with was pretty rough, took 7 or 8 stokes on each link.

This is a nice kit in a nice soft case. My only critique is that the directions (nothing but drawings) are not very clear.

Not quite the same one pictured. Im bot sure if it is vintage Stihl, or a counterfit. It doesnt have two lock wheels like all others I have seen. Maybe stihl changed the design recently.

Why would you buy a cheaper sharpening kit? This one carries the Stihl brand, yet costs little more than non-branded tools.Previously, I made the mistake of only having a round file to sharpen chains. This kit comes with a guide and flat file used to maintain the height of the depth guage (the bit on the chain in front of the cutting tooth). In my case, this kit confirmed my chains were in bad need of adjustment. This only takes a few minutes (on an 18" chain), but makes a huge difference.Summary:The round file cuts really well, and with minimal effort.The flat file and guide work equally well.The case - apart from looking good! - provides a handy, and remarkably well made, roll-up carry case (made in a thick canvas with sewn edge tape)..Really pleased. If I had to buy another one of these each year, I would happily. I suspect it will last a lot longer than that.

When I bought a Sthil chainsaw I didn't realize how often the saw teeth would need sharpening. A blunt saw is a pain to use. I checked online for advice on sharpening and found this filing kit. It's so quick and easy to use and makes a huge difference, restoring the cutting power back to what is was.

Be sure to check out the chain spec of your saw before ordering.I was recommended this kit by a Pro Tree Surgeon and it is easy to use with the filing clamp I also purchased.I ordered spare files as well as files do wear out with regular use. The pack/case is good spec with both stud and velcro fastenings. Pleased with purchase.
