Safariland Pro Impulse Plus Hearing Protection, in Ear Earplugs with Keychain Storage Case – for Firing Range, Shooting and Hunting

Yes, I know the correct definition of "literally." I bought these a while back and tossed them in my shooting box. Yesterday I went shooting, and put the case for these on my key ring. Today, I decided to try wearing them while driving with the windows open, and I will not leave the house without them anymore. For shooting, they're okay, as good as any earplugs I've tried. They weren't as good as I'd have liked when I was next to a guy with short-barreled AR with an A2 flash hider/compensator, but they worked fine for firing my own guns without muzzle brakes, and when the AR guy was replaced by a guy shooting an unbraked .30-06. I don't know of anything other than over-ear muffs that will sufficiently dull high-powered rifles with muzzle brakes, and .223 from a short barrel is never pleasant to be near, so that's par for the course. But oh, man, off-range! Today, the plugs were still in my pocket when I needed to drive across town. The car was hot from being in the sun, and the weather was nice, so I opened my windows. Normally, I have to close the windows once I get off residential roads because the sounds of traffic hurt my ears, and at high speeds, the car creates a series of pressure waves that pulse painfully. I remembered these and put them in. For a semi-quantitative measure, I normally drive with the stereo at 14 with the windows closed. On the rare occasions I drive main roads with the windows open, or driving on the highway with the windows closed, I have to increase it to 18. After putting these in, I had to increase it to 16, but here's the amazing thing: I didn't have to change it again. I drove with the windows open, still at 16. I got on the freeway *with the windows still open* and it stayed at 16, and I could still hear my music! These blocked the high-frequency sounds of wheels on road, dulled the sound of my own engine and those around me, and only slightly decreased my ability to listen to the stereo. They also completely blocked the pressure waves caused by driving with my windows open. I'm buying 3 more pairs of these--one for my shooting box, one for each car, and I'll be carrying the first pair in my pocket at all times. I get sound-induced migraines pretty often. I'll be using these anywhere there's a lot of noise, and I expect to get far fewer migraines. These literally changed my life for under $15!

I wanted a pair of soft ear plugs when shooting my .22 rifle. I found these on Amazon and read each of the reviews. Some made no sense, as they seemed to expect an $18 pair of plugs to perform like a $300+ electronic headset. One reviewer did suggest that these are best used with a headset as double protection, and in the description Amazon mentioned a Safariland Range Kit. I ordered both. When both arrived I tried the ear plugs on, they come with 2 sizes of plugs and both seemed to fit my ears just fine. They were easy to put in and take out and the carry case was really handy to keep on my range bag. I took them to the desert to shoot my .22 rifle and 1911, they worked great and were very comfortable. I have to confess that after wearing them for nearly 2 hours, I did forget they were in and started driving home and realized I forgot to take them out. They are just that comfortable. My next outing I used them with my headset from the range kit and worked out my Barrett 92B. When used with the range kit headset the combination provided plenty of protection. I can only say good things about these $18 ear plugs as they work for what they are apparently intended to do. I think most shooters would understand that the $18 ear plugs alone would not be adequate in an indoor range. My advice: buy the range kit for the added protection when needed. I took a gamble but knew that the Safariland gear I used on the job was top notch; these did not disappoint. My wife says they do not stop the noise from my snoring, but you know?????

I've used this with a micro 9mm and an AR15 (16in barrel in 556) as well as 20 in 12 guage. My ears did not ring or feel pain. I used the them once indoor shooting outdoors in practice. Still worked. I would double up for compensated guns and completely indoor shooting. They do work their way out with time if you are talking or chewing, since jaw movement pushes things out of the ear. So they will be best suited for hunting with non compensated guns, short shooting sets outside, and everyday carry. I've used them when friends blast car music with shake the car volume. Overall electronic buds are better but these are great and just as good in most situations. Convince to carry is 5 out of 5

I love these things , super cheap and work really well there comfortable for a few hours and because of there design you can hold normal conversations with them in. I keep them on my key chain so I always have them ready. Only issue is large hunting rifles can still be quite loud but nothing drastic.

The Good: They do block some noise. They would be fine for mowing the lawn. They are ample for almost anything besides shooting sports. The Bad: They are in no way suitable for any high powered rifles, any sort of indoor shooting, or for any power level rifle that has a brake. They just don't do a good job of protecting your hearing. Don't believe the hype. The Final Verdict: Please keep in mind that dB of sound attenuation advertised seems to have very little to do with actual sound reduction. I tried these out for the first time today since I have a 3-gun match this Sunday and wanted a possible alternative to my Howard Leight Pro over-ear protection as the days get hotter. The rated dB of sound reduction for the two types of protection is essentially identical, however, I have never had any discomfort at all using the Howard Leights (or the slimmer Howard Leight Sports that claim much less sound reduction). This includes shooting a braked 16" AR (in .223 Rem. up against barriers, indoors, and under a covered shooting bench, and shooting a 20" braked .308 Win and Type 53 (20" 7.62x54r) in the same situations. I was in an open field at my range today to test these plugs and I took one shot from my AR and immediately my ears rang horribly and I took these out and put on my proper over the ear hearing protection. While these plugs may be borderline acceptable for rimfires and possibly for smaller caliber handguns outdoors, I will never use them for shooting at all. If my ears ring from shooting a rifle once, I know that the sound attenuation is not acceptable for prolonged use of quieter weapons even if they don't make my ears ring. I, personally, like having the ability to hear things. These will not preserve that ability if you are a shooter. Before anyone suggestions that I don't know how to insert them properly, I will say I have been an active shooter (easily 5-10 hours a week) for almost 30 years, and worked in a rock club with loud music for 6 years, and I have always worn some sort of hearing protection in these settings. I have no problem getting a good fit with foam earplugs, or these plugs. In my opinion, no in-the-ear protection that I have ever tried is acceptable beyond rimfires and non-magnum handguns outdoors. Most any over the ear protection has been acceptable. Save your ears folks. Buy real hearing protection.

Why I bought: Thought these would make a good backup pair for myself in the case of forgetting ear protection for the range or for a friend tagging along at the gun range. First Use: 2 Rounds shot Gun: S&W SD9 (9mm) Pistol Ammunition: Blazer 115gr. FMJ Location: Outdoors (woods) My thoughts: DO NOT USE THESE FOR SHOOTING. I chose the bigger of the two pair and my ears were ringing after the first shot. I followed instructions on proper insertion per the manual included. I do not recommend these for any form of shooting as they do not block the higher db levels. Safariland makes a lot of incredible products, however this is not one of them. Will be returning. Ears beware. Given the fact that I was outdoors and shooting a smaller 9mm round, I cannot imagine using these indoors or with a larger round. Please do yourself a favor and save your ears and purchase something else.
