Reading the Lam Rim
There are a number of Lam Rim texts available. For those who do not study Vajrayana Buddhism, this might be confusing. It is said that the historical Buddha (aka Lord Buddha Shakyamuni) gave 84,000 teachings. They were given to different people at different times, and were focused on where that person or people were in their process, and what those particular person/s needed to know in next step towards enlightenment. So what might be the needed instruction at one part of the path, might be detrimental at another part of the path. At some point, you might need to go east, but at another west. This can leave a Buddhist quite confused. So the great accomplished master we now know as Atisha, organized the teaching of the Buddha into a method called the Lam Rim, or graduated path. You follow the path in the correct order, and it makes accomplishment much easier. Many spiritual masters since, primarily Tibetan, have expanded on Atisha's short work with more extensive commentary. The difficulty in reading them, is that even with good translations, they are focused on a culture and time that is very foreign to modern westerners. The cultural dismissal of women is easily seen in many Lam Rim texts. Now this commentary comes on the scene. The author has taken the Lam Rim teachings that he received from his own teacher, and taught them in a way that is accessible to westerners. And it is respectful of both men and women. I can read this Lam Rim so much easier than other Lam Rims I have read. Even though the author is not my teacher, I appreciate the care that went into this work. I highly recommend it.

Good training manual
This author is subject to partisan controversy. I do not follow this cultural phenomenon, partisan controversy. I consider this a good book suitable for study. I particularly like that the author offers the reader specific meditation subjects connected to the graded path. It is one thing to tell the student to read, think over and finally to meditate on this material. The author wisely provides the student with specific meditation instruction.I bought this book because I thought it would be a commentary on Atisha's Lamp on the Path. It's not. But that is no reason to lower its rating as an excellent book. This, like so many Buddhist texts, points out the way to a lifetime path. It's not a book to read and forget. It instructs us in how to reform our lives and follow the Mahayana Buddhist path to its conclusion. It is a nice supplement to the other graded path texts (lam rim). For example: Atisha's Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment , The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment: The Lamrim ChenmoLiberation in the Palm of Your Hand: A Concise Discourse on the Path to Enlightenment and The Jewel Ornament of Liberation: The Wish-Fulfilling Gem of the Noble Teachings .Meditating on any of these texts will change your life provided you follow their instructions.

At last! On Kindle!
I’ve periodically checked to see if it was offered on Kindle- even recently- must’ve missed the 2017 release. This text is a Vajrayana bible- contains everything. Other of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s texts expound more deeply on the subjects, but you can find them all here. Not to say Joyful Path is contained within the rest. There are pearls here, and essential explanations of core practices, principles, and explanations of those practices, with references to lineage holders and historically important figures. I really love this book. What’s fantastic about it being on Kindle, I can highlight to my hearts content without defacing a holy text and I can read parts of it wherever I am, which aids in my practice and study. I can’t count all the times I wished I could whip out JP to consult something on the spot. Now I can! Thanks, Tharpa!

Extraordinary comprehensive book for Kadampa Buddhists
Beautifully written, highly logical, organized, complete. Nicely indexed. Glossary in back.642 pages in a book small enough to handle very easily. The hardcover edition is at an excellent discount, is sturdy and very attractive. This book is for Buddhists who are studying Lam Rim - a step by step path to enlightenment based on the 84,000 teachings of Buddha. It is not an easy read; it is rather difficult to study. I originally purchased the audio-book version which is read beautifully by John Singleton. Now that I am more serious about wanting to master this material, I purchased this book."Modern Buddhism" will be released in hardcover shortly - it should be a worthwhile purchase for Kadampa Buddhists.

This is the core dharma teacing for all levels of practice. For us beginners there is great merit in simply reading the text with attention and reverence. As we improve in our accomplishment we find instructions for practice at all levels. Wonderful resource. Geshe Gyatso is amazing for his ability to present the most esoteric doctrines of the Dharma in an easy to understand style of discourse. Any practitioner should be extremely blessed by, and grateful for this text.

My Bible
Goes without saying, alongside Geshlas other books this is a stable must read study book. I have been attending a local Kadampa centre for a couple of years now and we are currently studying this book. It’s good to dip in and out and every time I read a chapter or page or two it sounds different and my understanding depends. I was not able to purchase from my centre due to lockdown and Amazon provided an excellent price and was delivered very swiftly. Thank you 🙏

Just Another Cult Recruitment Tool
This is a flagrant cult recruitment book. Please be weary. You have been warned. This book is full of utter nonsense, and then demands reverence. If you want to start to learn about Buddhism genuinely, please do not buy this book. Instead, look at the works of Henepola Gunaratana.

Reference text.
There are many simpler Lamrim texts available and many easier to read. However, as an analysis of each of the Lamrim meditations it is an excellent analysis for the more interested practitioner.
