Anteaesthetics: Black Aesthesis and the Critique of Form (Inventions: Black Philosophy, Politics, Aesthetics)

Unflinching and Inventive
Bradley seamlessly weaves together black and feminist critical theories, philosophies, and careful interrogations of specific artworks to lay bare the complications of two simultaneous truths; black art has shaped this world, yet black folks are violently dispossed of a home within the aesthetics of this world they have fundamentally created. Bradley teaches us of the anteaesthetic, the negative underside of the aesthetic, and then invites the reader to engage with black art in these terms. The resulting lessons are profoundly humbling. Bradley repeatedly points to the "philosophical invention of black art," and this book is itself a beautiful example of the same.
