Good value large screen reader, and a passable e-ink Android tablet
Reading is good. For medical reasons, I find reading a lot harder than I used to, so anything that makes that easier is worth having. In that sense, this device certainly succeeds. I used to own a Kindle, back in the days when they had physical buttons an nod touchscreen, and everything I liked about that I like about this, but bigger, and with tunable backlighting. But that wasn't the only reason I bought this. I also wanted a general purpose e-ink tablet. On that count, it's pretty good. Not great. There are some limitations, but none of them are a deal breaker. The good:- No restrictions on app installations, and most apps that make sense on an e-ink display do work.- Can adjust screen settings on a per app basis, to find the best trade-off between image clarity and update speed.- Easy to use Settings app.- Settings allow you to get rid of the things in the Launcher that you don't want to see.- Microphone and speaker good enough for a conversation with ChatGPT-4.The bad:- No way (that I'm aware of) to change the launcher app.- Portrait orientation only! There are apps that force the device into landscape format, but there are times when you went the choice, and you just don't have it.- Audio limitations. My old bluetooth speaker connects, but my posh Bluetooth headphones won't, perhaps because licences for the higher-end audio codecs cost extra.- WiFi disconnections. WiFi turns off when the device goes to sleep, but doesn't turn it on when it wakes up. Maybe there's something I've missed in the settings to disable that behaviour, but if I haven't, I really hope we see that fixed in the next OS update! The ugly:- App icons not designed for an e-ink display look terrible when placed alongside icons that are. There's no way to change them, as far as I can tell.I've been having some success using the tablet as a computer terminal, and it's worked very well.If I felt the need to use the stylus as well I might feel differently, but I think I got great value for money.
