I am a teacher of German. There are a lot of things I don't like. Why, for instance, is there no English to German section in the glossary?I am not convinced, however, that there is a better beginner's book for adults out there.

My German teacher highly recommended this book.

I've been learning German on my own for two months now and this book (+Activity Book) has been very useful. Though I can't complete all the exercises (I don't have the CD), it is still a fantastic way to approach the language. Halfway through the book I ordered the second volume which I have just started today. With just these books, I have been able to learn at an exponential speed and can already understand a few conversations/read some parts of the German newspapers.

This Coursebook is almost useless without the Audio and Support Book Pack (CDs) which cost another $40. The optional Activity book is another $17. I'm now into this course for ~$75! Buy the combined Course Pack, it's cheaper.

Best for beginners. Includes all the basic grammar

A very good introduction to the German language, perhaps particularly for the older learner (in my case in my late sixties). The scenarios (the shop, the hotel, public transport etc.) are just the ones a tourist is most likely to encounter and the conversations illustrated are quite easy to understand. There is an accompanying CD (available separately) with the conversations in spoken German, which is also very helpful.

I just began German classes 2 weeks ago and the material seems very well designed for its purpose, the books are complemented by a dedicated web site and and app (which have't tried yet). Note that in my personal experience I have a 2 hrs session once a week with a german teacher.

Ich gebrauche das Buch, um Engländer Deutsch zu unterrichten. Es ist sehr attraktiv gestalten und macht Spaß, damit zu arbeiten.

I ordered this book for my German evening course. It is very useful, there's many exercises, many of which use a CD from the activity book, which the teacher has. If learning alone without a class, I would definitely recommend the activity book and the version of this book with the CD too. At the end of each chapter there is a summary list of phrases and words, and a little checklist to make sure you have learnt everything you need before continuing.
