![Iris [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51qpLsaXyzL.jpg)

Biographical account of the life of existentialist author Iris Murdoch as recalled in the memoirs of her husband, Professor John Bayley. John (Hugh Bonneville) is a shy slightly goofy undergraduate at Oxford who falls for fellow student, the brilliant and charismatic Iris Murdoch (Kate Winslet). Against all the odds she returns his affection and so begins a love affair that will endure for over 40 years, amid the ups and downs of her achievements as a famous philosophical novelist. The film eventually flashes forward to the couple in older age, with John (Jim Broadbent) slowly realising that Iris (Dame Judi Dench) has a mental illness, one that threatens the existence of her personality, of the person he knows and loves. Review: Excellent Acting In This Very Good Film - Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent & Kate Winslet all at their best in this film. Jim Broadbent portrayed the husband of a dementia sufferer with great sincerity, and Judi Dench is just a consummate professional in any role she plays. Thought provoking film acted superbly. Highly recommended. Review: Excellent film, a good true story with the "I ... - Excellent film, a good true story with the "I don't want it to end this way" feeling. Judi Dench brill as usual

A beautiful film
Iris is a true story based on the lives of Iris Murdoch and John Bayley. The film rotates between present day (as it were) and their youth. Murdoch is played by Judi Dench in the present and Kate Winslet in the past. Whilst Bayley is played by Jim Broadbent in the present and Hugh Bonneville in the past and is seen primarily through the perspective of Bayley. I cannot praise these actors enough. Rarely do you see such performances. It is truly stunning. Its a film that shook me to my core. It was intensely emotional. Jim Broadbent was truly magnificent and portrayed the feeling of watching someone you love so very much begin their descent into losing their ability to utter the most simple words to perfection. Utterly gut wrenching. Judi Dench is nothing short of a superstar in front of a camera and I felt that everybody pulled their weight in this. It is a film that I'd have to describe as simply beautiful. I can only hope I never have to deal with this sort of thing myself. I find it difficult to convey my feelings further. It is one of those films that you must watch and I am sure you will know what I mean. Honestly, its something we all should see.

In a class of its own.
The unravelling of Iris Murdock's dementia is both difficult and heart-rending to watch. The blind tenderness of her husband's devotion is matched by Judi Dench's portrayal of a transformation from a profoundly intellectual academic to a child-like innocent. Judi Dench doesn't play the part she IS the part. This disturbing theme is lightened to some extent by the flash-backs to University days and more normal student activities. I have watched the DVD several times, and recommend it as a superb example of quality and professionalism.

Competent
Watchable but a trifle workaday. A book would have been a more rewarding experience. This is really just a taster.

Great film to watch again
I loved the Film, I saw it first time many years ago and as I am reading now Iris Murdoch book I wanted to see the film again. So great that is was available; but not so great that only for 48 hours I wish i could have it a bit longer.

Iris (Murdoch)
Interesting true story about a successful author who develops dementia. She is looked after by her loving husband of many years. Gives a good insight into the problems faced by people with such illnesses as well as those of their friends and relatives. The Iron Lady is similar. The main difference is that Iris Murdoch is looked after by her husband, but Margaret Thatcher's husband had already died.
