Jim Corbett Omnibus: Man Eaters of Kumaon; The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag & My India

Delightful history of a bygone era
Not only is this book about true stories of a era in India, under the British rule, very wild and remote, where the local inhabitants were being terrorized by tigers turned maneaters ( often through human injury), but it is written in a easy delightful naive way of the 1930s.One of the most lovely stories of human knowledge of the jungle, compassion for his fellow human beings, and eventually the man that pushed for the conservation of India’s wildlife, including the tigers and leopards he had hunted through necessity.Highly recommend.

Conservationist, hunter - the strange irony of Jim Corbett
I'd read many of the titles in this omnibus when I was a young man. I always had a soft spot for his ability to chill you with fear and yet love both the animals [man eaters] he hunted and the country in which he hunted them. My favourite is still 'The Man-eating leopard of Rudraprayag'. The leopard was a considerable adversary for Corbett and the killer of well over 400 humans over a many year long reign of terror. Corbett evokes the fear, the power of a man eater, and yet conveys great sympathy both for victims and the leopard, which is only doing what circumstances have forced it to do. Well worth a read.
