Legendary, Emmy winner Dick Van Dyke - recognized in 2012 for his iconic TV roles with a "Life Achievement Award" by the Screen Actors Guild - enjoyed yet another hit series for eight seasons (1993-2001) as Dr. Mark Sloan on CBS' hour-long murder mystery, Diagnosis Murder. As chief of internal medicine at Community General Hospital in Los Angeles and an L.A.P.D. consultant, Sloan has a knack for getting into trouble, negotiating the twists and turns of mysteries and solving crimes with the help of his son, Steven, a homicide detective played by real-life son Barry Van Dyke. Nostalgic TV Mysteries
Overall, it’s a nice DVD set. Another VEI offering in a plastic case with a well to hold all the discs in soft holders. At least this type of packaging is easy to access the individual discs. As far as the show itself, we had heard of it in the past, but we’ve never seen it before. After reading about the show, that it was supposed to be lightweight mystery stories mixed with comedy that just happened to take place in a hospital, we thought we’d give it a try. Besides, it had a lot of great guest stars of the era, some in particular that we wanted to see. So here it is in our collection. It’s a lot longer show than we had known about at the time, so it will take us a while to get through all the seasons. Sampling some early episodes, we see the comedic element to the show, and the armchair detective stories remind us of similar shows of the era. This guy just happens to be a doctor, but like the other shows, the occupation of the character doesn’t much matter to the situation of the episode. In the credits, we even see names of producers and creators that we’ve seen in other shows, so the overall essence and production style of the show is familiar. The stories may be about solving murders, but they’re shown in a way that’s easy to digest for TV. So far, all the stars have chemistry and seem to be at ease in their roles. Of course, the two leads (apparently we aren’t allowed to write their names) are father and son, so that’s a natural. We’re still getting used to Chachi as a doctor. The later DVD’s picture another young doctor, so we’re looking forward to seeing what he’s all about. The rest of the cast doesn’t seem to have any annoying characters yet. As for the DVD set, the box promises some extras in addition to the series. We found the disc that contains all the pre- and post-series movies. We found one disc that is labeled to locate the pilot episode. But the other couple of extras are not labeled, so who knows where they might be within all the discs. They sound fun to see, so hopefully we’ll find them someday as we make our way through the set. All in all, we’ve enjoyed the show so far, so we’ll throw it a 4 or 5. Its crime mystery theme is not our usual taste, but we’re not uncomfortable with anything depicted. We watch for the stars and the guest stars and not the material, so we just consider it nostalgic TV. Yes, we’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys similar shows of the 80’s-90’s time period. If you’re looking for dark, realistic crime, then no.

A few flaws, but overall a brilliant collection
Without a doubt a great treat for fans - and overall a wonderful collection. As stated, all 8 TV series and 5 movies are present, as well as the bonus episodes of Jake and the Fatman and Mannix etc. The video quality is generally as good as it can be, 720x480, although everything is interlaced which is a bit nasty. A good deinterlace will do wonders though and this will look pretty great - especially the later series'. The discs are clearly made to a budget like other reviews have noted, as they have some dud areas fresh out the box which make playback freeze up. Maybe I'm lucky but I've experienced this on 3 of the 48ish discs I've tried so far and skipping forward 30 seconds has resumed playback fine, so I'm not too bothered about it. I'm not sure how a standalone DVD/BD player would handle it, but playing in a computer with VLC these bad areas of the disc are easily jumped over. The cases are similarly a bit cheap. I had this shipped internationally which is maybe my own fault, but several of the cases had loose discs upon opening them up. Luckily only one seemed to have sustained real damage and I think it'll buff out just fine, but be a little cautious. I also have one or two disc trays whose center clips won't hold a disc securely, and the folding central parts that hold the additional discs feel like they wouldn't stand up to much punishment - although mine are all intact and fine. Lastly, the one real actual issue I had was when I got to the end of season 7 and put the last disc in. It was episodes I'd already seen, and upon closer inspection, I had a duplicate of the last disc in season 5. VEI happily sent me a replacement disc after I emailed them, which arrived promptly and works fine, so well done them! In the end if you really want to see this show again this is kinda the only way to do it, so if it's worth it to you you should buy it, it's ace!

Diagnosis Murder is a favorite, and I'm thrilled I finally own entire series!!!
I received this set I bought with Christmas money. Diagnosis Murder Complete Collection arrived in perfect condition and early. After reading reviews concerning sync issues before purchasing, I put season five disc 4 in right away. Though I haven't watched the last four episodes entirely that give other buyers issues I did watch a few parts. Sync is working to me so far. I will watch them before 30 days is up just to be sure and update this review if I am wrong. I don't have any idea why people complain about picture quality and this is someone who prefers Blu-ray. The series is in full screen format and looks much better quality wise on my high definition TV than all seasons of Matlock I purchased separately at a time. If I had more money, I would have purchased Blu-ray, but for a TV show I don't think high definition makes that much difference or matters. After looking at screenshots on Blu-ray. Com, Blu-ray doesn't appear to have made that much difference unlike Charlie's Angels and The Rockford Files which are older than Diagnosis Murder. I'm 28 so I was too young to have watched the series during its original run. I did watch some episodes during rerruns with my mother. By the way the five movies are included in this set. I love this show!!! If you like Hart to Hart or Murder, She Wrote, you will love Diagnosis Murder. The other two classic shows have the same premise. Mark Sloan seems to have the unusual knack of finding murder happens wherever he goes just like the characters of the Harts and character of Jessica Fletcher on Murder, She Wrote. I'm so glad I purchased this set!!! I wonder if other buyers may have purchased used sets resulting in sync problems. Seems odd only some have had this problem if others aren't having issues. It's always best to buy in new condition. Just be sure to put season five disc 4 in first just to be safe before your 30 days runs out. Good luck and enjoy!!!
