Differential equations and linear algebra are two central topics in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. This innovative textbook allows the two subjects to be developed either separately or together, illuminating the connections between two fundamental topics, and giving increased flexibility to instructors. It can be used either as a semester-long course in differential equations, or as a one-year course in differential equations, linear algebra, and applications. Beginning with the basics of differential equations, it covers first and second order equations, graphical and numerical methods, and matrix equations. The book goes on to present the fundamentals of vector spaces, followed by eigenvalues and eigenvectors, positive definiteness, integral transform methods and applications to PDEs. The exposition illuminates the natural correspondence between solution methods for systems of equations in discrete and continuous settings. The topics draw on the physical sciences, engineering and economics, reflecting the author's distinguished career as an applied mathematician and expositor. Review: well written - Strang's books are usually user friendly. Some topics are organized well such as differential equation system and phase diagrams. This book makes a bridge between differential equations and linear algebra. It is worth reading and studying. Review: Book just what we wanted - Excellent

If there were more mathematics teachers like him the world would be a better place
One can only have the utmost respect for Gilbert Strang. If there were more mathematics teachers like him the world would be a better place.

Very good, but too expensive
I really like Gilbert Strang, I would give another star, if it wasn't so expensive. I'm sure it's not the author's fault, but books for students should be a lot cheaper than that. I've decided to buy it anyway just because I like this author.

It is a typical Prof Gilbert Strang book. Full of Information
This book provides a clear idea of the fundamentals of Differential Equations and Linear Algebra. It then provides an exact way of solving Differentia l Equations using the art of Linear Algebra. As an Electrical Engineer I am finding it most useful when dealing with Electrical Network Theory.

Recebi hoje. Capa dura e paginação de excelente qualidade.
Gostei do livro. Equações diferenciais é uma das matérias mais importantes da matemática aplicada. E o preço estava em conta.

Not Dad's ODE Textbook
Not your father's ODE book. This is not the standard 'plug and chug' ODE book. In short, this book will kick your ass. You must use this in conjunction with the videos Strang made specifically for this book - the url is given in the book. If you methodically work your way through the text using the videos and all other available materials and you also utilize Arthur Mattuck's freely available ODE course on the open MIT courseware website then you will have an excellent foundation in ODEs. Also, I highly recommend all the MIT math courses with video lectures to anyone who wants to further their mathematics.

Another Excellent Book by Gilbert Strang
Simply excellent (as all of Dr. Strang's books are. As always, he presents otherwise difficult material in an intuitive fashion making it crystal clear. I have read several of his books on linear algebra and computational science and found the presentation of the calculus involved in differential equations to be an excellent addition to his previous material on linear algebra. This is a book that should be read (even if one has read several books before on related topics (as I have). The video presentations available at ocw.mit.edu are a valuable addition to the book.
