Brief overview of ancient China with interesting lessons.
This is a more scholarly work than most others from this publisher. There is a clue in the length of the subtitle. There is more analysis and commentary together with the bibliography and references made discretely by number throughout the text are found at the end of the book. There are several illustrations and these are mainly maps, adding to the information and suppllementing the words.Paralells are drawn in describing the rise and fall of dynasties. Discussion of how much of history is myth and how much verifiable with a suggestion of written records helping the historian. The invention of paper and the cultural leap it makes possible is included. Different philosophies and their effects on society and leadership are discussed. The importance of water management and development along rivers is covered. We also encounter Confucius and Sun Tzu in this book. The text takes the reader into the third century CE.The full five stars would be merited if several editing mistakes were corrected and some improvement would be a timeline diagram and a pronunciation guide for the Chinese names.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
