I’ve had this a few weeks now and although i get sparks, the sparks don’t seem to set anything alight. what on earth am i doing wrong?

If you are trying to light a gas cooker, then do not have the gas on full blast, nor too low. If you are trying to light a fire then you first need to make a tinder ball out of fine, dry material. Have a look on YouTube. Lots of Yanks will show you how to do this, and also how to survive a nuclear holocaust... !!

Would one of these be allowed on a plane, in a small survival kit? In checked/ suitcase luggage, not carry on? Thanks

I would think so, as long as it's not hidden. You would have to check, I expect. It's not a sharp item or combustible

keep trying with a sharp edge on the same spot till you are through the black covering then you should start getting sparks.
