I am trying to tighten but am unable to pry open the cubes. Will it break if I pull it very hard? What is the best way (process) to tighten??

I take back my former answer! Try to pry off the center pieces and there may or may not be a screw. I saw that you could do this from one review, but if the cap won't come off after a bit of force, I'd stop.

i have never had a real cube before so what do you mean about by standard size?

Nowadays we have several Rubik's knock offs, different sizes and several pieces, for example I have seen one with 4 squares by side it means 24 squares in total instead of 54. In the other hand I have found one with 18 squares by side, total 108!!! This is why I said the original standard number of squares. If you are thinking in purchase your first cube, Rubik's is the must have...
