Hours of wonderful music in small package.
I am not a sophisticated judge of great music. But I love this collection. The 9th sonata particularly appealed to me today. It seemed to reflect for me the unhappy realities of today, yet always give hope.Beethoven is a treasure for all mankind. These performances float, and whisper, and laugh, and shout. But Amazon screwed up. The packaging let the jewel box be destroyed in shipping. All the little bits of plastic were there, so I know it happened in shipping. Just luck that the cd's were not scratched.

Brava Anna
Chamber Music is not my favorite. However, this epic effort by Anna Sophie Mutter is a must listen for all classical music lovers and especially for Beethoven fans. Beethoven was an enormously positive force in human history and this is revealed in these sonatas. These pieces are not foot stompers but must be absorbed slowly by repeated listening over time. Brava to Anna for making this heart-felt contribution to recording history.

and the musical personality can either please or annoy. these sonatas
The preconception about classical music is that the composition, written out in score with performance notations and voicing carefully restored by critical rummaging and fussing, is a given; performers either add insight and energy or subtract clarity and fidelity, and the musical personality can either please or annoy. these sonatas, recorded in live performances, cut both ways. there are moments of great beauty across flawless technical command and generally beautiful tone. there are also episodes of inexplicable and intrusive whimsy and overworked vibrato, which may have been the momentary inspirations and improvisations of the stage. certainly orkis seems always to know what mutter is doing and the sense of the two players responding to each other is impressive.the one virtue of this set that i have not seen commented is that the pair seem to take all of beethoven's repeats; for example, the kreutzer first movement is over 15 minutes here, compared to under 12 minutes in perlman/ashkenazy.

Too clever by half
Mutter has a gorgeous tone and is certainly technically skilled. But methinks she has gotten off track here. The issue isn't how willful or mannered her interpretation is. It is with her interpretation. There are too many micro-hesitations, articulations, accents, fluted notes and other gestures that make it feel like she is thinking, consciously, calculatedly, about every single note. Orkis' piano playing is much the same. They make it hard to lose yourself in the works. Perlman/Ashkenazy (still my favorite) makes me feel like they are absolutely possessed by the music. They make me feel like these pieces can absorb an unlimited amount of intensity, like a fire in a stove that gets hotter and hotter. Mutter, on the other hand, is emphatic, but in a precious, nit-picky way.Great sound, especially from the piano.

Not for everyone, but I love it
For those of you who enjoy listening to Beethoven on period instruments (shudder), this is not the recording for you. Nor is it a good recording for those who like things buttoned down, straightforward, steady, restrained, and unemotional. However, if you truly enjoy Beethoven and don't mind hearing new things, this recording is a must-buy. Mutter and Orkis bring a whole new perspective to the sonatas. Their wild tempi and dynamics are a little scary at first, but you'll soon fall in love with the powerful and lyrical interpretation of these sonatas and wonder what you did before you owned this wonderful collection.Close attention was paid to the score: every one of Mutter's dynamic, phrasing, and articulation choices is supported by the music. This recording does not go against Beethoven, as some have said on this website, but actually bring's Beethoven's markings to the forefront. The sound of the duo is just fantastic. No doubt this is the most romantic interpretation you'll ever hear. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. The living, breathing, luscious sound that Mutter brings to these sonatas is just unforgettable. In my opinion, this is one recording you can simply can't do without.

A shining star (make that 5 stars)
This multi-CD set of Beethoven'a Violin Sonatas is marvelous addition to the collection of any serious listener of fine music. The playing and the presentation of the violin and the piano are very nice, but what I really like about this is the ability to watch the music as it plays across my computer. The discs include the software program for following along as the sonatas are played. his allows you to see the richness of the composition and the delicate way that Anne-Sophie Mutter leads and then follows as Lambert Orkis plays the piano. This set is not inexpensive but its value far outweighs the price of listening to some marvelous music played by two very talented and matched artists. It give this 5 stars![...]

Beethoven would approve!
I have played these recordings many times and always find new things to hear with each and every listen. Mutter and Orkis have a highly individual approach, with great choice of tempo and phrasing that caused me to rethink these violin sonatas. These are works of art and I think Beethoven would approve of the tempo shifts, contrasts in dynamics, and overuse of rubato, especially, seeing that there are dozens of "standard" versions already, which have been documented on record and compact disc for over fifty years.I remember hearing the Kreutzer over the airwaves and found it fascinating, so much so, I waited for the conclusion just to find out who's performed this with such sheer power. All of Mutter's performances are full of nuance, striving for expressiveness rather than beauty of tone, though she is clearly a virtuoso, and her playing is matched, and inspired by Orkis's dramatic piano playing.I have many versions of the Beethoven violin sonatas, and I feel these performances are right at the top and will stand the test of time.
