Demon Hunter - The Resurrection [Blu-ray]
R**N
Dazzling Asian fantasy
This is an epic adventure-romance with stunning visual effects and filming, and several short, stylish martial arts and fight sequences. The introduction, which shows the fox-demon first imprisoned in ice and then being released by her bird-demon sister, is breath-taking in its imagination and gorgeous depiction. It shows how perfectly CGI can bring fantastical creatures to life in dazzling detail, and these effects are well-used throughout the two hour film. The plot follows the fox-demon, now in human form, as she tries to become human. Her path crosses that of a lovelorn Chinese princess (who wears armour and is a dab hand with a sword) who has travelled to the borderlands to rekindle a forbidden relationship with one of her childhood guards. Both women want the impossible and, in the grand tradition of all folk tales, they trade places to fulfil their dreams. This involves one of the 18-rated scenes in which they literally swap skins while cavorting in a sunken bath; it's rather more weird and less titillating than it sounds! The guard, now a general, is bewitched by the demon but his heart truly belongs to the princess. Emotional turmoil ensues... and then a massive army turns up at the fortress, demanding that the princess marry an unpleasant local lordling. Cue fighting, scheming, self-sacrifice, more brilliant effects and an extremely satisfying conclusion.Light relief is provided by an alternative couple; the demon-hunter of the title and the bird-demon, Quer. The actress playing Quer is particularly wonderful in her mannerisms, but all of the lead characters are memorable and intense. Also look out for the wolf-queen and the high priest of the attacking tribe: they're seriously bad news. The English sub-titling is clear and concise - it takes a little while to untangle who the characters are at the beginning, but stick with it and all become clear. The lovelorn moping moments are perhaps a little too long and my attention started to wander somewhat when repetitive scenes reinforced the Romeo-Juliet 'dying for each other' dynamic, but the pace picks up as the action heads for the spectacular finale. Much of the filming is done in gorgeous locations, atop soaring mountain canyons and in plunging pools of hyper-real turquoise waters. The costumes are lavish and gorgeous, too. It's rated 18 in the UK probably because there are a couple of gory moments -- demons eat hearts to survive and sink their clawed hands into humans to take them - but I've seen many 12A films which are more violent and explicit. In fact I suspect most teenagers are more likely to be bored by the romantic bits than they would be disturbed by the violence. No special features, which is a shame. Not a film for fight fans, but thoroughly enjoyable two hours of escapism into a wildly imaginative world.8/10

A Chinese ghost story with a ... heart
The original title of this film is "Painted Skin:The Resurrection",because it is the sequel to the 2008 film "Painted Skin".The "Demon Hunter" of the English title is a secondary character, who mostly provides comic relief. This is a well-acted, visually stunning, fantasy adventure film.It was shot at exterior locations, and enhanced by stunning CGI.Although there are martial arts and/or battle scenes, the film is a dark love story, which entangles in a complexemotional triangle the two female leads and the male protagonist. The feature film has only English subtitles. The blu-ray extras include the original trailer, the UK trailer,a short making of feature, in three parts, and twelve trailers of other Asian films, as follows:The Admiral, War of the Arrows, Legendary Amazons,Detective Dee, Shaolin,1911 Revolution, The Front Line, Yamada Way of the Samurai, 71 into the Fire,Mulan, Young Bruce Lee, The Machine Girl.

Konnichiwa This is truly a beautiful film. An interesting fairy tale but with some gore added! Good acting, a slightly confused story line. However the quality of the filming is unbelievable. More for children in some respects, but the adult themes and blood take it out of their domain. This DVD cost only £2 amazing value. sayonara

Enjoyable romp with an eastern take on demons or rather fox spirits.
A nice brisk paced film with nicely choreographed fights and comic moments. The characters are more 3 dimensional than in lots of other Chinese action films but lacks a little in the continuity department. For those of you who enjoyed A Chinese Ghost Story and The Water Margin then you will like this.

Painted Skin II
This is actually Painted Skin II, the demon hunter is a minor character but it was re-named after him for the UK DVD. The effects can be a little low budget at times but it is a fascinating and fun story with really great women characters.
