Recommended for future Tracey Emins.......
I bought this book for my 7 year old niece having read some of the positive reviews of this book. It has some nice , bright illustrations but I was actually really surprised by the fact that there is an over representation of 20th century art. There are a few tips for children to explore some of the techniques described within this book yet I am wondering just how much inspiration children will get from reading about abstract forms and the kind of stuff which wins the Turner Prize. The book may be bold and bright with useful time lines to explain the techniques described, however the subject matter is imbalanced. I could find very little about anything from the 18th and 19th centuries. There are some inset boxes to describe the tools and materials necessary to practice each technique as well as some suggested artists to explore. Art criticism is so subjective that any book introducing techniques to children is only going to be successful if there is someone passionate about what is being described to help explain. The suggestions for children to explore these techniques are merely that. The book is visually appealing. I do not think that the examples chosen are particularly inspiring and it is more likely to make some kids sceptical than inspiring.

Great book if your child is an artistic prodigy...
... not so great if you’re still at the stick people and wonky bunnies stage... Nice pictures but the techniques are perhaps a bit advanced for younger children...

It’s good as an introduction to art forms. I had expected it to be a bit more detailed.

I bought this for my grandkids, who come from 5 generations of artists. Shelby gets So excited when she sees Rockwell prints or a Van Gogh or a Georgia O Keefe bc at 7, she has learned about these artists & can pick out their work. It has inspired her to paint much more seriously. My 11 yr old grson could be a graphic designer already, but learning that diff artists have different styles has inspired him to find his own style. I see it enriching Their lives & I wish every child could have their own copy. I Highly recommend for anyone 5 or older.

This is a lovely, informative book. Families and homeschoolers would definitely benefit from looking through and discussing each technique before a visit to the art museum! It gives children a fine overview of style and materials used in famous works of art. Even adults will find interesting ideas and facts that they did not know. I purchased this to give as a gift with an art kit. The book has exceeded my expectations! I have especially loved using the timelines that appear with each technique presented. It is a wonderful way to teach and understand where something is placed in history. The book is hardbound and nicely made. We do love this book and will use it for some time to come. I also plan to purchase other books in this series.

13 Art Techniques is a lovely book for adults. My two granddaughters have not looked at it; at 6 and 7, they are likely a bit young. I think this book, which briefly describes art techniques is a perfect coffee table edition. I myself have enjoyed reading it at nighttime--it is informative, but not exhaustive.

I like the pictures and examples in this book, but the information is mediocre.
