Q: How many are in each package?

Hi, Thanks for your question. There are two metal plates that make up one template. To create one template, simply cut a 1"x2" piece of wood to the length required for your stairs. Q: Will this expand to 40”?

Hi, Yes, this will expand to any length needed for your project. A 1"x2" piece of wood is required to expand the template to any length, no matter how big or small. Simply cut the piece of wood a couple of inches less than the desired stair tread length. Then connect the metal pieces to the ends of the 1"x2" piece of wood to lock in your template.
