If you lay the flat plate on a counter then it is 1 7/16 to the top of the round barrel.

What is the length and diameter of the pin?

Barrel hinges are 5 in x 1/2 pins and yes they work quite well. I cut my gate in half and put them on to cut down on wind drag.
