Can you add ice to smoothies in this machine?

The booklet states do not use ice

do you have to use it to capcity every time or can you half fill it?

I have never used it at half but I have used it at 3/4 with no problem.

Can you saute the ingredients first

Not in the soupmaker but you could do that in a pan if you prefer. To be honest the soups are so tasty it is so quick and easy to just put all the ingredients in and let it do it's own thing. Very impressed....and hooked! Just running out of freezer space!
