Nier 2018+ is still amazing
I had this game new when it was released in 2010. It was ok but I did not enjoyed it much. Nevertheless after Nier Automata [best game in 2017 for me] I decided to give it a try once more and bought it again. This game is absolutely fantastic. How? I am asking myself this same question. Maybe I had to grow up to this? Graphic, although minimalist still surprises. Story is really engaging. Music is absolutely outstanding in this game I would say even better than Nier Automata. If you have PS3 still lying around and you are reading this review in 2018+ do not hesitate to buy it. It is still better than most of the games released in 2017 for PS4.

Um, best game ever?
This is a late review, but one i had to write! Nier is a very unique game and one of my favourite's without a doubt. The story is compelling, the characters are very memorable and the music is the best i've ever heard in a game. I loved it so much i also purchased the official soundtrack and artbook, unfortunatly Nier is a very underrated game, don't let the reviews get in the way of you missing out on such a gem. It's sad that this was Cavia's final game it deserves much more credit than it gets and i couldn't recommend it enough! (Completed it 5 times so far ^-^)

Most underrated game of past generation.
Do not let any of the professional reviews fool you. This game is great and is in my top 10 favorite games on ps3 (and i own around 200 games). The story, characters and especially music (i recommend buying the soundtrack). The graphics and gameplay are not very special but good enough. You do have to finish this game 4 times to really appreciate it (the 2nd/3rd/4th playthrough don't force you to play thought the whole thing again, but from a half way point), only than you will get full insight in the story and will be very emotional.

Great game
This game is a rare gem and well worth playing, fetch quests do get annoying but the music, story and gameplay make up for it. My only gripe was that amazon.CO.UK sent me a US copy of the game for some reason and I ended up wasting £5 on the DLC which I can't play due to this error X_XBesides that, I highly recommend this game.

Amazing story with a great cast of weird and well written characters. Overall an amazing game, and sadly way too underrated.
I was very hesitant to buy NieR when it first came out in 2010, with bad to mediocre reviews across the board, and a very limited amount of money, I decided to wait with it. A pretty big mistake, considering it went out of print a year later, making it quite a hassle to get my hands on. Either way, I finally got around to buying it, and man am I happy I did.The gameplay can be described as a very simple hack 'n' slash game with a tiny bit of customization thrown in in the form of "words" that you assign to weapons and magic to increase power, mana regeneration, item drop rates among other things. What makes the combat a bit different from other hack and slash games is the inclusion of what one can only describe as "bullet hell". A lot of enemies will spam projectiles in all directions, making you jump, dodge and fight your way through the barrage of damaging orbs to reach your target, making for some very interesting fights. The combat itself is a whole lot simpler than other games with similar systems. There are for example no combos in the game, just your average attack and a special attack that's unique for the type of weapon you're currently using, making i much simpler and more linear than the combo systems of let's say Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry.But the game isn't solely hack 'n' slash. It's an Action Roleplaying Game (ARPG) at its core, including leveling, questing, exploring, upgrading and more. Each weapon can be upgraded up to four times, and the materials for each upgrade has to be gathered either from harvest points found scattered throughout the world, or by defeating enemies. Quests reward you with money, materials and weapons, and provide a deeper insight into the world and its inhabitants. The game also changes perspective during different parts, including a Resident Evil like mansion where all colors fade to grey and with fixed camera angles, an underground lab with a top-down camera angle and maze like exploration and more. The gameplay itself is great fun and feels rewarding, even if it is lacking compared to its counterparts within the genres it ventures into.As with all RPGs though, the story is its biggest component, and this is where the game truly shines. The cast, consisting of a loving father as the main character, and his companions; a talking and flying book; a young boy with mystical powers and origin; and a foul mouthed young girl, makes for an oddly lovable ensamble of characters, who are all very well written and greatly voiced, making then truly feel alive. The characters will bicker, make jokes and general small talk as you traverse the world, and will often make comments about the quests you've recently undertaken, as well as make remarks about what choices you make when doing said quests, often making you question if you really did the right thing. The story follows the main character as he is trying to find a cure for Yonah, his daughter, who is suffering from the fatal Black Scrawl, a curse that overtakes the body bit by bit, making painful black symbols and runes appear on the skin, until the victim eventually pass away. One night, when the father comes back home from working, he tells Yonah about the legendary flower "The Lunar Tear", which is said to have magical properties, and that it will grant you one wish, any wish, should you find one. Yonah, plagued more by seeing her father worry than by her own pain, sets out the next day to try and find the flower and with it cure her sickness. This starts a chain of events which leads to the father finding the magical book, "Grimoire Weiss". When they eventually return to the village, one of the villagers tells the pair about The Song of the Ancients, a legend that tells of the white book Grimoire Weiss, which will defeat the black book Grimoire Noir with the Sealed Verses, and end the curse that is plaguing mankind. The story is incredibly well written, and has several unexpected twists and turns which work greatly in its favor. The ending part of the game is absolutely amazing, and reveals several shocking things about the world and your whole quest, suddenly putting a whole lot more weight to everything you've been doing. There are also four different endings, all of which can be unlocked in succession. After clearing the first ending, you can load your save file to restart from the second half of the game. This playthrough gives you more insight into one of your companion's backstory, as well as giving you further perspective into the enemies of the game. After finishing ending B, snd unlocking all weapons, you then get a choice on your third playthrough, showcasing ending C and D. Each ending gives more and more perspective, and have such great weight to them, definitely making it worth playing through the second half of the game four times to see them all.All in all a very good game, and it has definitely made it into my list of favorite games ever. If you can find it for a reasonable price, don't hesitate. It's definitely worth it.

An O.K. game
So I bought this without expecting much from it and I left it not being completely blown away but instead Ii was mildly satisfied. If you like action RPG's then you will enjoy this. Its very similar to the Ys. games. If you want a good time wasting game then this is the one for you. I spent quite some time doing side quests and in the end the game lasted me 22hours which im guessing will be the average time for most. The Story was what you expect for a Japanese "RPG" not great but I was kinda drawn in my how dark some of the side quests were. The best part of this game is the boss fights. I played the game on normal but i think it would alot more enjoyable on hard. All in all this is a game worth checking out if you are into this genre otherwise you will get bored.
