can i open these shapes into their nets?

Don't understand what you mean? The shapes are solid. The base of each shape can be removed and in the centre of each base is a small removable disc. You can fill them with water, sand etc., to compare volume and discuss capacity. Hope this helps? Incidentally this is a really good product, just watch out for the pyramids as the tips are extremely sharp - I used a nail file to smooth them down.

Do you need to keep the small circular pieces?

I guess you don't have to but you would need to maybe if you were filling them with something, e.g. rice. I've kept them with the shapes.

How big are these, approximately?

They are a good size for small hands. Adult could hold 2 or 3 in open hand. Very sturdy too.

Does this come with a sheet with names on?

Yes it does, it comes with a leaflet which explains all the shapes . Brilliant visual learning aid.
