The Art of Tiki

I found this book extremely intriguing, and a definite must-have for my dad, a Sven and Otto lover. The art and photographs make this an excellent coffee table book, which is where it sits at my parents’. It has caught many guests attentions, and they all enjoyed flipping through it.

This book is everything fabulous in tiki, and tiki history. Did not know it was going to be such a thick big book. Can’t say enough great things about this one!!!

Beautiful photography and layout with an engaging and informative narrative. Even if you’re not a tiki aficionado you will probably become one after enjoying this book.

Another great book by Sven Kirsten! A must have for anyone interested in Tiki culture. Great pictures and well written. My favorite book this year!

I love anything Tiki! The history of it, the art and of course Tiki mugs!

This is an interesting, uneven book about an interesting topic. Sven is an urban anthropologist who's had a remarkable impact on the revival of the Polynesian-pop phenomenon. His knowledge is encyclopedic, and his is an interesting book. However, while it shows many examples of Tiki art past and present, it doesn't get inside of the Tiki phenomenon from an artist's perspective. I would like to see a book by Shag, or some other contemporary artist, that would discuss how and why Tiki art evolved, and why a new generation exploring it.

There is less written content in Modern Tiki than in, say, The Book of Tiki or Tiki Pop. This is more focussed on pictures and builds on his previous books. If you've already bought his previous books, I don't think you'll be disappointed. If this is your first Kirsten book, and you're able to get it for published price of roughly $50CAD or less, pick it up before it goes out of print and the price skyrockets like the rest of his books! If this one goes up in price to over $80, you might want to go instead to Tiki Pop (published at $58 and has so far gone up to $88) or even The Book of Tiki (lucky if you can find it for under $150), as they provide deeper history on tiki culture. But a great book in any case!
