I've not used special ink and had no problem printing detailed designs. Make sure you leave enough time for them to dry.

Q: How long do the transfers last when used on other items like slate or wood

I used this to transfer photos to a wooden memory bench I made for my mum. I applied them to varnished pine and then added clear gloss over them. This was for outdoor use and had people sitting on them. Some of the photos are still weathering well nearly two years on. If it's for indoor use it should be permanent. Don't rush applying them.

Yes its blank & you can print on whatever design you want. Pretty easy to use too, it's not a long lasting one, mine stayed for a couple of days, but I avoided getting it wet.
