It worked, replacing the original cable which seemed to be totally u/s
Arrived ahead of time which meant that I did not have to wait long to prove that it was the original cable that was faulty and I did not have to buy a new camera :). Also works for a second coolpix camera (different model) that I was given (without a cable). So now I have two cameras!
