The Zoomable Universe: An Epic Tour Through Cosmic Scale, from Almost Everything to Nearly Nothing
G**N
It's not a quick tour!
I've seen an animated video called "Scale of Things" that provides the same sense of awe in less than 10 minutes, but you can't stop at each level of size to ponder and examine the facts as we know them. This is important for more can be gained when putting that information "through the grinder" if it doesn't seem simple enough to be what's actually happening and why. It's the greatest mystery of all. Just to begin with, why is it even here? I'm looking for that hidden-in-plain-sight place that says "ANSWER HERE!" with flashing lights and arrows.

Perhaps the book of your lifetime
I meant the headline - every word. Above the title of the book on the dust jacket: The Zoomable Universe, are these words: "...From almost everything to nearly nothing". And what this means is: From the unimaginably huge - galaxies lightyears across - to the unimaginably small - a sea of jostling quarks. All of it illustrated with spectacular color photographs, charts, timelines. A book that causes the reader to sit back speechless in wonder, amazement and delight. It will take a long, long time to digest the marvels revealed in the magisterial work.

Excellent read
Nearly new book that provides lots of information as it compares relative sizes of everyday objects and travels thru the universe of stars, galaxies and our solar system.

Great overview of the known universe but lacks design polish
Really good overview of the existing known universe, done in a very easy to read and follow format! But, a few issues do detract me from giving it a full five stars... To this date, I am an avid Scientific American (SA) subscriber. I love reading most of their articles and especially am looking forward to any advances made in a field of fundamental or applied (astro) physics! So, when I saw a ‘book review’ for The Zoomable Universe in one of their articles, I got very excited and bought a copy right away. Book arived on time and in a very good condition! At an initial glance, seemed very well designed and made. It proved to be a very easy read, which in itself was a good and a bad thing. On one hand, was really fun to get acquainted with the ideas but, on the other hand, lacked depth at each presented Zoomable Stage, therefore, leaving it more of an overview or an executive summary rather than an in-depth reference material (which was the idea from the start just keep in mind if expecting a lot out of it). Although, my main issue ended up being the design itself. I will admit that given the difficulty of the material itself, it was as good as one could possibly present it on a 2D paper but there were number of graphics themselves that lacked certain level of details and an overall design quality that I came to expect from an authentic SA publication... This book felt a littlebit rushed to print: graphics’ quality varied from in places. Some were well crafted but others as simple as a copy and paste without any blending. For some reason, rim to rim page prints and some text overlays with contrast to graphics in places made it distracting to follow... Also, flipping every page to the end made the book spine warp. It is still straight just no longer angled at 90 degrees to either cover. I am still very glad that I bought it and proud to have it as part of my library but there is something to be said about final product polish!

Book condition as advertised
I ordered this book because it was advertised in "Like New" condition. The book is in Pristine condition. It looks new right off the bookstore shelf. To save money, I'm willing to settle for a little wear and tear on a book I may want, but this book is in perfect condition. I've never seen packaging like that used for shipping it - it was in heavy cardboard like material that fit the book exactly, sealed with a wide band of cardboard all the way around the package. I' m sure any book packaged like that would not be damaged in the shipping process. Also, it shipped faster that expected. Highly recommend seller and seller has a 99% positive rating. Thanks for this wonderful addition to my science books!

He is sharp. You are lucky.
We are all lucky to be living in a time where knowledgeable scientists write directly for the public. I am tired of finding errors in newspaper accounts nd magazine articles. This book is excellent; the writing is engaging with wisps of humor and the full-color artwork and infographics are amazing. I prefer it on a Kindle app, but the paper version has nice large type and graphics (I have both versions). If I were still lecturing on these subjects, I would be tempted to borrow some of the analogies and images. The author covers the entire range of sizes in the imaginable universe: some 62 orders of magnitude, although the smallest 15 or so are far beyond our ken. There is a very nice summary at the end which relates sizes to things you may know about. The notes at the end contain a wealth of references for the inquisitive mind; you could spend delightful hours with these. My only quibble is with the book’s title: it should be simply Powers of Ten, but that has been used both by a film by the Eames and an wonderful little book by the Morisons Both of those, excellent as they were, date back to the early 1980s, and this 2017 book brings everything up to date. Read this book! Give copies to friends, as I will.

I cant stop thinking about some of these principles and concepts
This book brings to life some unbelievable concepts and principles of our universe. I find myself thinking about them during the following day after i spent some time reading the book the night before. Like the description depicted on the book's cover of a person pointing a flash light up into the night time sky and explaining how that beam of light or quarks are streaming past Neptune later that same night while i'm sleeping.

Very comprehensive
To say it's comprehensive is putting it mildly. It covers everything. The inspiration for buying this was a book I once read called 'Towards the atom' which went from everyday objects and zoomed in to the atom as it was known in the 60s. This book goes a lot further out and inwards with great illustrations but does at times get rather too technical if you want this for a younger person.

A masterpiece of its kind.
Excellent book. The author dives into the logarithmic scale of dimensions and makes a huge impression of how it works. A masterpiece of its kind.
